Thirty games in .first haif of Tourney
CLINTON - The Clinton Optimist Bantam
Hockey Tournament concluded its first half
on November 2 and organizers are gearing
up for the final half which starts on
December 7 and will run until the following
Sunday.
Last weekend saw 30 games played as 23
teams in the three divisions took to the ice.
Winning the "A" division was Oakville as
they defeated Stoneybrook 2-1. Oakville was
awarded the Clinton Optimist Club Trophy
Good qualities in Optimist tourney and Stoneybrook the Fleming Feed Mill
Trophy. Goderich won the "A" consolation
as they outplayed S.W. London 9-2. The
winners took home the Royal Canadian
Legion Branch 140 Trophy and the runner-
ups took the Martin's Steel Trophy.
The "C" championship was won by
Lambeth as they beat Hagersville 3-1,
winning the Bank of Montreal Trophy.
Hagersville received the Clinton Pro
Hardware Trophy for their efforts. The
Norholme Decorating Trophy was awarded
to Milverton as they defeated Mitchell in the
"C" consolation final, 3-2. Mitchell was
presented the Dixie Lee Chicken and
Seafood Trophy.
Alvinston downed Teeswater 6-5 to win the
"D" championship Blue Fountain
Restaurant Trophy. The K.W. "Danny"
Colquhoun Memorial Trophy was presented
to Teeswater. Ilderton emerged victorious
as they defeated Thedford, 6-5 in the "D"
consolation final. The Beattie Furniture Ltd.
Trophy went to Ilderton and the Taylor
Farms Trophy went to Thedford.
Last week I inadvertently offended
members of the Clinton Optimist Club.
Instead of giving them due credit for the
hours of preparation and work at the
Optimist Bantam Hockey Tournament, I
listed ways which I thought the tournament
could be improved.
My intentions were not to say that the
tournament was poorly run, but that the
Optimists have .established a good
tournament. It has now reached a point of
success and security where it can take new
ideas and incorporate them without any
problems.
Another reason for last week's column
was to stir up some community support. In
order for anything to work, be it a
tournament or a parade ;,r a fair, it needs
the support of the community.
But after re -reading the column from an
Optimist's viewpoint, I can certainly see
why they were upset.
This year's tournament is the fifth year
that the Optimists have donated their time,
energy and organizational skills to the
Bantam hockey players. Mopping floors,
sweeping the stands and running the clock
for an entire weekend, as well as Thursday
and Friday nights, takes a lot of manpower.
The Optimists also have to shell out the
money for the arena rental.
Organizing the schedule for 40 teams with
five divisions is also no minor task. The
schedule is setup in a way which allows
teams to play on a Thursday and then not
have to play again until Saturday. This
allows the team the opportunity to travel.
home and not have to worry about playing
first thing the following morning. This also
eliminates the need for billeting.
The Optimists' wives got into the act last
weekend, helping with the breakfasts.
Tournament Chairman Greg Burns was also
pleased with the assistance he received
from a Katimavik participant and the arena
helpers.
Service clubs play an important role in
small communities. Without them, many of
the little extras we enjoy at the local arenas
and extra activities we take in, would not
be possible. But many times their behind the
scenes work may seem to be overlooked.
We here at the Clinton News -Record have
worked with our local service clubs on many
occasions. We understand and appreciate
the time and effort' that. volunteerism
involves.
These clubs also need the support of the
entire community in order to make these
special events successful.
The Optimists have shown themselves to
be competent leaders of Clinton's Bantam
Hockey Tournament. Their job will be made
easier, and the tournament will continue to Clinton A's

After the third Mitchell goal Clinton seemed
to get going again as they scored five
unanswered goals to take the victory. Jason
Carter tied the game at 3 - 3 as he scored on
a deflection in front of the net off the shot of
Shaun Chipchase. A minute and a half later
Scott Jeurtt scored what proved to be the
winning goal unassisted. after snaring a
clearing pass and rifling it into the goal.
Two minutes later Darrell Lavis scored on
a two on one rush with Jason Carter to in-
crease the Clinton lead to 5 - 3. Jason
Carter's second goal of the game on a
breakaway gave Clinton a three goal lead.
Scott Wright set up the goal giving Carter a
lead pass at centre ice. Gerry Cappelli dos-
ed out the scoring on a 30 foot blast to the
right corner. Clinton outshot Mitchell 25
shots to 19 over the contest.

Seaforth was able to forecheck Clinton
closely for three periods and gain the hard-
earned victory and even up their season
series with Clinton at one game each.
Seaforth scored at the 15 second mark of
the first period as Steve Papple put the puck
between the pads of Clinton goalie Derek
Hoggarth. With less than three minutes re-
maining in the firs,t period Seaforth's Jason
Beuttenmiller made it 2 - 0 on a breakaway.
There was no scoring in the second period
as Clinton controlled most of the play.
Seaforth's goalie John Maylan turned in a
brilliant performance in the game as he
stopped four Clinton breakaways. Three
.goal post shots didn't help the Clinton cause

The third period was quiet as Clinton had
a comfortable 4-1. lead. However, Mitchell
fought back to score one goal, ending the
game 4-2.
The Clinton A's then went on to face
Lambeth on December 1, but came up on the
short end of a 3-1 score.
Lambeth scored two first period goals
within the initial three minutes of play to
take a quick 2-0 lead. The second period
remained scoreless, however Lambeth
increased their lead to three in the third.
Devon Colquhoun nullified the Lambeth goal
with an unassisted goal of his own.
The Lambeth victory put the Clinton A's
out of the tournament and the Lambeth
team went on to win the "C" championship.
Clinton B's '
The Clinton. B's, playing in the "D"
division, were not as successful as the
Clinton A's in their first outing. They faced -
off against Ripley, losing 5-1.
Clinton was first on the scoreboard with a
goal by Ricky Pickett. Pickett put the puck
behind the Ripley goaltender with only 25
seconds remaining in the first period. Bryan
Beattie earned the assist.
Ripley was held scoreless in the first
period but then proceeded to divide their
goals between the second and third period,
After the second period, Ripley held a 2-1
lead and at the end of the game, left the ice
with,a 5-1 victory.
The Clinton B's met Thedford on
December 2. The Thedford team was too
much for the home team to handle as they °
defeated Clinton 6-1.
Three first period goals by Thedford
forced Clinton to play catch-up hockey. In
the second Period, their defence held
Thedford off the scoreboard while Curtis
McCone netted one for the locals. Assisting
on the play was Mike Ladd.
The third period was not as profitable for
Clinton as they allowed three goals and were
unable to respond with goals of their own.
The 6-1 loss eliminated Clinton from
further action. Thedford went on to the "D"
consolation final where they played a fast
brand of hockey against Ilderton, but lost 6-
5.
Blyth
In other "D" division action, Blyth
defeated Howick 7-3 in their first match on
December 1. No goals were scored in the
initial frame, but both teams battled for the
lead in the second period.
Paul Hoggart opened the scoring as he
took a pass from Larry Hunking. One
minute later Dean Whitfield gave his team a

ment on November. 29. Clinton did a good job of keeping the puck out of their net, winning
their first game, 4-2. The Clinton team then went on to face Lambeth. The Optimist
Bantam Hockey Tournament starts again on December 7 and runs until December 9.
