Early Files .0 Clanton Horticultural Society has beepformed
100 years ago
November 26,1884
A Clinton Horticultural Society has
recently been formed. At a preliminary
meeting, new members decided that the
Society should acquire a legal status by in-
corporation.
The Doherty Organ Company has done
much to spread the fame of Clinton as a
manufacturing point. In order to do this,
they have made sales of their instruments in
England, Australia, Sweden and other such
countries.
The Bayfield baker, Mr. J. King, has left
• to take charge of W. Young's oven in Clin-
ton. While in the lively Little village, Mr. and
Mrs. King added to the life. J.K. will do
much towards giving the citizens of Clinton
good bread - "the staff of life."

Wednesday, November 3 was a day which
will long be remembered by the members of
Trinity Church, Blyth. On that day their
church so dear to their hearts was formally
and officially set apart and consecrated to
the public worship of Almighty God, in ac-
cordance with the rites and discipline of the
Church of England in Canada.
The Consecration was conducted by the
Bishop of Huron assisted by the following
members of his clergy; Rev. William
Henderson, Wiarton; Rev. Thomas Hicks,
Dungannon; Rev. D.E. Camerson, Brussels
and Rev. W.H. Hartley, rector of Trinity
Church.
Last Wednesday Hensall's rejuvenated
post office was thrown open to the public. It
is a credit in internal fitting to the enterprise
of postmaster Sutherland and the workmen
employed in construction. The designers
were the postmaster aril Harry Ingram.
The latter had the contract and made a
grand job of the cabinet. He was ably
assisted by J. Johnston and H. Reynolds. W.
Stoneman put on the finish. Ross and Taylor
furnished the material and the Office
Specialty C Toronto, supplied the boxes.
For some time the farmers of the west end
of Tuckersmith have been growing as many
as 10-12 acres of beans. They have had some
difficulties in getting them threshed in a
marketable way, as the gran threshing
machines are not suitable for the work. No-
ble Holland, of the Huron Road West, has
built a machine which appears quite
suitable for the work.
It is a small machine and is run with a
gasoline engine which is set on top of the
machine. It is doing satisfactory work. This
is the first threshing which has been run
with gasoline in this section of the country
and is quite an attraction.

Doctor Dafoe of Callender has gained
fame by keeping the Dionne babies alive,
the first time in history that five children of
one birth have lived. But a Goderich doctor
is also winning some renown by bringing
around a young victim of lockjaw after a
severe attack. •A Colborne Township youth
stepped upon a rusty nail and contracted a
severe case of lockjaw, and for some time,
no hope was entertained for his recover. The
physician, Dr. Whitley, who is 78 -years -old,
continued to treat him, visiting five times a
day when at his worst, until he was out of
danger.
It is a remarkable case and has caused
widespread interest, as only one in about
every 5,000 who contract lockjaw, recover,
We have hearq some complaint that we
had not had our Indian Summer this year, so
surley that is what we are having now. All
this week it has been wonderful, warm, sun-
ny days, more like spring than fall, but for
the fact that the days are shorter. Flowers
which had not been frozen earlier are now
blooming.

After trimming some of the overhang
from the CNR Station at Brucefield, the ma-
jor moving job got underway last Thursday.
Leaving the siding at the village where it
has served the public since the 1970s, the
building has been taken up the Brucefield
Road and across the corner lot of the Co-op
mill, onto the highway. Murphy Loyal
Orange Lodge purchased the station from
CNR for a tender price of $210.
The campaign being waged by both the
Canada Temperance Act (CTA) and the
Legal Control committee in Huron County
appears to have gained some speed during
the past few days. Both sides have now ac-
cused the other of conducting a smear cam-
paign. Neither one, however, has been able
to establish just what they meant by that.
Four per cent dividend on all share ac-
counts was decided upon by the members of
the Clinton Community Credit Union
Limited. To date, the Credit Union in Clinton
has loaned over $2 -million, has $486,688 in
share captial and a total of over 1,800
members. It began operation in 1952.

The controversial curve on Highway 21 at.
Clan Gregor Square in the Village pf
Bayfield . will get a flashing 'signal light in
the near future.
Two letters were received on the matter,
one from MP Bob McKinley, and one from
MPP Jack Riddell, both with attached
copies of a letter from the Hon. John
Rhodes, minister of transportation and com-
munications, stating that the area was
reviewed and a flashing light was needed.
On November 17 a general meeting of the
Huron Trail Riders was held at Hallett Cen-
tral School. The 1975 officers are as follows:
Doug Reily of Seaforth, . president; Bob
Wright of Dungannon, vice-president; Nor-
ma Reily of Seaforth, secretary -treasurer.
Directors are: Harvey Hoggart,
Londesboro; Graham Sholdice,
Londesboro; Dorlain Flowers, Clinton;
Noreen Straughan, Goderich; JoAnne
Sholdice, Londesboro. Senior represen-
tative, Brian Straughan, Goderich.
another transport truck didn't quite make
the squeeze. The result was two topless
backhoes and $24,000 damage.
A Sarnia driver was unable to drive the
tractor trailer through the 12 foot railway
underpass on County Road 13, just outside
Clinton.
Clinton firemen and Fleming Feed Mill
workers are fighting a fire in one of the Feed
Mill's giant corn dryers.
The men are busy cleaning out the dr) ‘2,1*
of about 65 tons of corn in order to get at a
fire in the middle of the five -storey struc-
ture. Cause of the blaze was unknown at this
time, and no estimate of the amount of
damage was available.
The Huron County Board of Education
and its elementary Khoo' teachers may be
close to contract settlement despite negotia-
tions which, at best, have been slow.
In a prepared release Monday, Shirley
Weary, head of the board's negotiating team
and Brenda Schedler, chief negotiater for
the teachers, said they were "hopeful of
5 years ago reaching a settlement soon." Neither side
November 22,1979 would expand on the statement preferring to
It happened again. On November 19 keep negotiations behind closed doors.

and James Storey received the offering.
On Saturday, Audrey Middleton, Ralph
Welsh, Harold Beakhust and Tudor Wain
ioined other Anglicans at the Deanery
workshop in Wingham. Rev. Aubrey and
Hilda Bell were on the team for the
workshop.
The purpose of the workshop was to
prepare lay people to be facilitators in their
home parishes for an intentional empha
on Evangelism. The aim of this emphasis is
to make Anglicans in the Huron Diocese
aware that they too are evangelists as they.
care for each other in'the church and share
their faith experience with one another.
It is hoped that Anglicans will be more
aware of each other's needs and enfold into
the church and community.
