Two of the area's largest employers have
announcedlayoffs which will see almost 200
Workers idled.
Dashwood Industries Limited (DIL) vice-
president Al Rankin said Monday that 105
production Workers have been laid off at the
Centralia plant. Rankin said the layoff was
the largest ever in his association with the
company and the November 2 layoff date
was the earliest in the company's history.
DIL usually laysoff in mid November, he
said.
Employees may be called back to work m
stages in either late January or early
February Rankin said, but cautioned it was
dependent on their winter sales push.
The squeaky wheel certainly gets the
grease in education circles.
A part of the $177,293 debt against the
Vanastra Recreation Centre was lifted from
the shoulders of the Vanastra ratepayers by

night but the larger portion of that debt was
left for Vanastra to pay off.
Tuckersmith Council took over by an
unanimous vote the operating deficit of
$58,293.54 and this will be paid by all the
residents of Tuckersmith from the
township's general funds.
The police report that Hallowe'en 'was
very quiet in these parts, except for a few
thrown eggs, and a good natured prank or
two, including one played on Cam Addison
on Maple Street by a couple of former
students who thought his picnic table and
lawn mower would look good on his garage
roof.
However, the boys were good enough to
come back a couple of days later and take
them down.

A new municipal complex will be unveiled

Council decided to have a ratepayers
meeting so that town citizens could see what
plans the architectural firm of Tillman and
Lamb have planned for municipal offices.

He also stated that a referendum is plann-
ed that would allow a yes or no vote on the
proposed project, but the note would not be
legally binding on the new council.

Russel Thompson. Some of the new street
name sign posts were pulled out, but they
were not damaged.

For the first time in many years the
machinery in the evaporator at the foot of
the big hill at Auburn, is silent. The reason is
a scarcity of apples.
The severe frost of last winter took a great
toll of apple trees in this district. The crop
. here has been light and spotty. Any orchard
that bore heavily last year, is badly winter
killed.
On Thursday evening last a Hallowe'en
social was held at Grace Church when a
splendid turnout both young and old were
there to enjoy an evening of fun. Ghosts,
goblins, witches and black cats were there
in plenty and a jolly time was spent.
The Bayfield Legion held a masquerade
dance in the Town Hall. This was well at-
tended, but there were not that many in
costume. The prizes went to: First, Ladies'
Fancy, Mrs. M. Toms, dressed as a cat; se-
cond, Doris Featherston. First, Ladies Com-
ic, Mrs. L Makins, dressed as a witch; se-
cond, Mrs. Peter Clark. Men's Comic was
won by Emma Sturgeon and second place
went to Stewart Atkinson.

In speaking with one of the proprietors of
the Electric Light plant, he states that six
houses have been wired and new lights have
been placed there during the past month.
There are approximately 4,000 lights in Clin-
ton and they can accommodate a lot more.
Hallowe'en passed off very quietly. There
were numberous parties held, and as usual,
the pea blowere was a nuisance. There were
a few gates and steps removed. Some wan-
ton destruction was done with a number of
fences being pulled down.

of William Johnston, near Belgrave. During
-the day Mr. Wilson of Hullett had been
threshing there with a steam thesher, and
had nearly half a day's work to do next day
to finish. Some of the threshers went out
several time during the evening to see that
all wasright before retiring.
However, fire broke out between 12 and 1
a.m. and all the contents, including two span

REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICES
NOVEMBER 11, 1984
Once again we are approaching Remembrance Day in Clinton and all over Canada,
with our ranks diminished due to the passing of time, but with many things for which
to be thankful. The Royal Canadian Legion's slogan this year is
LEST WE FORGET
When you purchase a wreath or wear a poppy for November 11th you PARTICIPATE In
a dream of freedom for all, which has been so expensive in Canadian lives in the past
and which our Armed Forces of today are striving so hard to achieve for our future.
Remember our past with pride but Think, of our Future with confidence and
Participate.
On Sunday, November 11 we will hold our annual service at the
Legion Hall commencing at 9:30 a.m. Parade to Cenotaph to follow
service...On behelf of all area veterans, we thank you for your
previous support.
