It's not just the fit who survive, but also
the most informed. That adage is par-
ticularly applicable to you and your
automobile as the winter months approach.
Whether winter brings hot sun and salt
air, sleet, snow or acid rain, all can wreak
havoc with a car's finish,if it has not been
properly protected against the elements.
Here are some suggestions to help you
prepare your car for the months ahead.
First, take a critical look at the car's ex-
terior. See any rust spots, chips or scrat-
ches? If so, remember that rust forms at the
site of tiny chips and scratches in the paint's
finish, and ypu may want to have these
touched up before preparing the car for
winter.
The interior of the car can be a mobile liv-
ing and dining area, especially if you spend
hours each day in traffic. This places
special importance on keeping the interior

Winter
driving tips
Looking forward to winter, it is important
that motorists keep in mind the special driv-
ing hazards of the season.
0 Take a few minutes in the morning
before leaving home to clear ice and snow
off all windows of your car as well as the out-
side mirror, if any. Don't be a "peep hole"
driver.
• • If your street looks slippery, test it by
depressing the brake lightly, making sure
first that there are no other cars close to
• yours.
• Take special care when approaching an
intersection. The stop and go traffic there.
may make the road surface very slippery.
• Maintain a longer -than -normal distance
between your car and others. This will help
minimize the chance of collisions in case of
sudden stops.
• Turn slowly on wet and slick areas.
• Look out for icy patches on, overpasses,
bridges and hills.. These areas freeze quick-
ly, usually before other road surfaces.
• If your car starts to skid, steer in the
direction the car is headed. Take your foot
off the accelerator. Don't start braking until
the car has slowed and you have regained
control. •
• Be especially careful when braking or
accelerating at dusk, or dawn, when streets
arid roads often are iciest.
A winter survival kit in each car ought to
include: at least one pair of gloves (in case
the driver has to do some "digging out") ;
flares, mcitches and a flashlight (with fresh
batteries); battery jumper cables (which
can be dangerous unless used properly);
screwdriver and adjustable pliers; heavy
wool blanket; an ice scraper, and rock salt,
sand or gravel (to add•weight to the rear of
your car for traction and to pour under the
tires if you are bogged down in snow).
•
Batteries':
an explosive issue
Among the most important and least
understood parts of today's modern
automobile is the battery. Technically, a
storage battery is an electro -chemical
device. In the process of releasing electrical
energy to your car, the battery produces
hydrogen gas: highly explosive.
This is why motorist are urgedto heed
these battery safety tips from Car Care
Council:
1) No smoking near a battery. .
2) Keep your fat away from the battery.
Wear safety goggles.
3) Avoid sparks. When connecting booster
cables cover both batteries with a cloth. Be
sure the final ground (negative) connection
is made to the frame of the stalled car, as
far as possible from the battery.
4) Be careful with tools. A wrench or
pliers that contacts a "hot" terminal or wire
and a grounded ,part of the car can create a
spark strong enough to burn metal.
5) When carrying a battery, use a good
carrying device. Spilled battery acid can eat
into your clothing ... and your skin ... very
quickly. If you do get some acid on you,
