La Boheme comes to Blyth
BLYTH - Some of the finest young singers
in Canada today will raise their voices in a
' celebration of youth as the Canadian Opera
Company Ensemble returns to Blyth with
Puccini's La Boheme. To be presented at
Blyth Memorial Hall on Sunday, November
18, 1984 at 2 p.m., La Boheme captures the
very essence of that innocent age when life,
with all its delights and disappointments, is
just beginning to unfold.
' Puccini's best -loved and most theatrical
opera will transport audiences to Paris, that
mecca of struggling young artists. Lavish
sets and- costumes designed especially for
this tour will set the scene for one of -the
great love stories of opera. Set in the Latin
Quarter of Paris in the 1830's, La Boheme
tells the story of the bohemian artists, Musi-
cians, poets and philosophers who filled
their lives with gaiety, song; dance and
romance. The story . centres on the poet
Rodolpho and the frail seamstress Mimi,
who share little money or possessions, but
boundless love and dreams. The Blyth pro-
duction wil be sung in. English with piano ac-
companiment.
The Canadian Opera Company Ensemble
is composed of talented young singers
chosen through national auditions to serve a
one-year apprenticeship with the Canadian
Opera Company. Many of the voices that
made last year's productions of The Merry
Widow and The Toy Shop such a delight for
audiences in Blyth are returning with the
Ensemble this year: Tickets for La Boheme
are available from the Blyth Festival box of-
fice by calling 523-9300. Box office hours are
Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

No Sex Please!
By Jamie O'Rourke
CLINTON - The drama club has started
again at CHSS and is under the direction of
Mr. Oliver.
Members are looking forward to another,
great, successful year." The new stage
manager is Chris Buurs, and afterust two
weeks Chris is doing a very good job of get-
, ting prepared for the Christmas production.
The play the club is rehearsing is called,
`No Sex Please, We're British", which will
be performedthe week after exams.
The play was written by Anthony Marriot
and Alister Foot. There were a large
number of students who auditioned for the
cast, but only 10 were selected. They include
Tim Craig, paul Lippincott, Dave Steven-
son, Bob Dunn, Nina Potter, Allison Dunn,
Steve Souch, Julia Feltham, Steve Lippin-
cott and Lori Brandon. Some of these names
should sound familiar because they were in
last year's play, "Play On". •
Members hope to make this new play a
success and also make this year's drama
club the best CHSS has ever had.
albums and appeared on over 300 radio and
television shows in the last twelve years, in-
cluding two Anne Murray specials,
numerous Tommy Hunter shows and a
Hagood Hardy special in 1976.
In recent' years, Shirley's music has
grown from her country and folk music
roots to encompass the jazz and blues tradi-
tion as well. For the Nov. 9 concert she will
perform a mixture of her own compositions,
many of which have hit the "top 10" in radio
play, along with some classic country and
folk tunes. Shirley will be backed up by a
three piece band.
Tickets for the concert are $10. each, and
are available by calling the Festival at 523-
9300.

BAYFIELD - The Bayfield Branch
Library is pleased to host "A Taste of
Robert Service" with Charles Hayter on
Saturday, November 10 at 2 p.m.
"A Taste of Robert Service?' is a one-man
theatrical performance rather than a
lecture or reading from the printed page.
The program explores the life and times of
Robert Service through his poetry. From
Service's native Lancashire, England to the
goldfields of the Yukon and beyond, Mr.
Hayter traces the poet's travels and
experiences. During the narration, Mr.
Hayter recites several of Robert Service's
most famous ballads, such as "The Shooting
of Dan McGrew",along with a number of
his lesser known works.
Charles Hayter is an actor with over 25
years of experience in Canadian theatre,
T -V., radio and films. Like Robert Service,
he was born. in Lancashire, England and
emmigrated to Canada in 1952.
Mr. Hayter's first performance . of "A
Taste of Robert Service" was appropriately
held in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories
in 1971. Since then he has presented the
program in . more than six countries
