Canadian band
shows promise
By Janet Tench
Honeymoon Suite have accomplished,
more than many Canadian artists. With
their debut album, they penetrated the
American charts. At the time there were a
mere three Canadian acts on the chart.
Their self -titled LP is an interesting meld
of rock and new wave, this giving it wide ap-
peal. It begins with the hard -rocking "New
Girl Now", soon to tone down to "Burning in
Love", a punchy rock melody. Then Johnny
Dee, vocals; seems to change his singing
style, making "Wave Babies" similar to a
Duran Duran melody. Of course this
change, while surprisingis refreshing.
Later, the band employs .a high-tech sound
with "It's Your Heart."
It is wonderful to see such an innovative
Canadian band handle such diversity so
adeptly. (Even the tongue-in-cheek cover is
unique!) Despite Dee's vocals being at
points, reminiscent of Split Enz, the band
has carved out its own sound in the callous
wall of North American music. Honeymoon
Suite, the album, is an energetic effort,
showing the band up in a promising light.
