Fitness is an ever increasing subject. Peo-
ple of all ages are walking, cycling and jogg-
ing more than ever before. It may not seem
like much, but a simple stroll to the corner
store or a bicycle ride to school, helps keep a
person fit.
Exercise is not the sole answer to good
health. To be the picture of health it is
necessary to maintain a good diet.
Jane Muegge, Rural Organization
Specialist for Huron County, and 600
members of area 4-H Clubs, are getting into
the spirit of fitness and nutrition. Through
the project Fitness Fare, they are learning
everything from what is good to eat to how
physically fit they are:
The project emphasizes that, "food is the
fuel for all exercise, from pushing a pen to
running a marathon. Eating the right kinds
of food influences how you feel, look and per-
form."
"We're stressing that you don't have to
change your diet, just your habits," explain-
ed Jane.
The first of the seven meetings in the
Fitness Fare project deals with balancing
eating with fitness. It also explains the four
S's in personal fitness. They are stamina,
structure, strength and suppleness.

Having stamina means that. a person has
strong and healthy lungs, enabling them to
continue a given exercise over a period of
time.
Muscle, fat, bone and water gives a per-
son their structure, Not much can be done
about the amount of bone and water in the
body, but the proportion of muscle to fat can
be changed. By exercising, the amount of
muscle is increased while the amount of fat,
decreases.
Adding shape to the body are strong
muscles. They also allow for good posture
and allow a person to push, pull and lift ob-
jects much easier.
Suppleness means that muscles are
elastic enough that they are not strained
when exercised. Another issue discussed
in the project is diets: According to Jane, it
is alright to eat fast foods and snacks as long
as you know what is in them.
"Fast foods play a role in our lives. What
we try to do is explain what is lacking so
they can make up for it in other foods," she
explained, . s
As' far as snacking is concerned, "it's
alright to snack, as long as it is healthy food
and not junk food."
At the completion of Fitness Fare, the 4-H
member will have the knowledge of prepar-
ing recipes that are low in fat, high in fibre,
not too sweet, yet taste good. They`will also
know about warm-ups, stretching, en-
durance and cooling down.
New nets
By Anne Narejko
CLINTON -• Recreation Director Kevin
Duguay is looking into the purchase of
Megg-Nets for the Clinton Arena. The deci-
sion to buy two new nets through fund rais-
ing was made at the October Recreation
Committee meeting. The frames, netting
and posts will cost $3,000 for the pair.
"These nets arehigh quality. They're
sharp in appearance, heavy duty and have
safety factors," commented Mr.' Duguay.
The nets are considered safe because the•
net operates on a magnet system; allowing
it to slide from its position when jolted by a
player. This helps reduce the number of
serious injuries that occur when a player
hits the frame of a net that does not give
way.
"These are the same type of nets that
were used in the Canada Cup and in the
NHL," explained Mr. Duguay.
He went on to explain that the old nets are
still useable, but require updating.
' Arts Sub -Committee
The Clinton Recreation Committee is
looking for new members as they are plarm-
ing to add an Arts sub -committee.
Mr. Duguay stated that this sub-
committee• would be in charge of program-
ming events related to the arts as well as
looking after the Clinton Town' Hall
Auditorium.
