Hallowe'en has ancient beginnings, congregation learn
By Mrs. Lewis Stonehouse
BELGRAVE - Approximately 20 elemen-
tary schoolchildren formed the choir of
Knox United Church, Belgrave on
Children's Sunday which is held monthly
on the third Sunday. They were accom-
panied by organist, Mrs. George Procter.
Rev. John G. Roberts spoke on the word
"Hallowed" which bears special
significance to Hallowe'en.
Prior to the Roman invasion of England
the Celts or native occupants of England,
Scotland and Wales celebrated the festival
on Dec. 31. On that date the spirits or ghosts
of the dead were supposed to return to earth
and wander about; hence the masks,
costumes and spooky creations,
After the arrival of the Romans the date
was changed to Oct. 31 and sculptured pum-
pkins with lighted candles and apple dunk-
ing were added to the festival.
The following day, November 1, is "All
Saints Day" and has been of note since the
seventh century. It is observed as a church
feast day, all -hallows, Christ has overcome
all.
