About 70 ..ladies celebrated Ontario's
Bicentennial last Tuesday at the Auburn
Women's. Institute held in the Auburn Com -
malty. Memorial. Hall. The hall was
decorated with large_posters depicting the
early days in Ontario'4.and the tables were
centred with a small $icentennial flag and
all received a Bicentennial pin. The guests
from St. Helens, Dungannon, Tiger Dunlop
and Londesboro and Auburn were welcomed
by president Mr's. Eleanor Bradnock and
secretary, Mrs. Robert Peck. Many of the
Auburn members were in dresses worn over
a hundred years ago.
The dessert and coffee was served after a
welcome to all and the singing of the
Women's Institute grace followed with Mrs.
Emerson Rodger at the piano. Following the
dessert, greetings from Huron County
Warden Tom Crinningham was given and he
presented Mrs. Elva Straughan, the eldest
Auburn member, with a Huron County pin.
Proud Beginnings, was the film shown by
Mr. and Mrs. Ross Robinson depicting early
days in Ontario. This excellent film made by
the Ministry of Agriculture and Food was
enjoyed by all.
A rousing sing -song of old favorites was
led by Mrs. Donald Haines. A contest of
things used 200 years ago was given by Mrs.
Leonard Archambault. The winner was
Mrs. Charles Merrill. A reading, The Coun-
try Doctor was given by Mrs. Thomas. Hag-
gitt. A duet was sung by Mrs. Tom Jardin
and Mrs. Emerson Rodger.
A spelling match was conducted by
McDougall in the absence of Mrs. Oliver
Anderson. Those taking part were Mrs.
Winifred Girvin, Mrs. Ehner Black, Mrs.
Graham McNee, Mrs. Jean Cook, Mrs.
Margaret Jewell, Mrs. Tom Haggitt, Mrs.
Janet McPherson, Mrs. Donald Buchanan,
Mrs. Dave Anderson and Mrs. Dorothy
Grange. Grange was the winner and Mrs.
Winifred Girvin second.
An old-fashioned geography match was
conducted by Mrs. Hugh Bennett. Those tak-
ing part were Mrs. Charles Merrill, Mrs.
Margaret Taylor, Mrs. Gordon Chamney,
Mrs. Jim Aitcheson, Mrs. Mary Brindley,
Mrs. Dorothy Reed, Mrs. Muriel Moffat,
Mrs. Elliott Lapp, Mrs. Hazel Reed and
Mrs. Beth Rutledge. The winners were Mrs.
Charles Merrill and Mrs. Margaret Taylor.
Lucky door prizes were drawn by Mrs.
Robert Peck and the afternoon closed with
the Queen. The hostesses were Mrs. Tom
Lawlor, Mrs. Tena Empey, Mrs. Celia
Taylor, Mrs. Isabel Turner and Mrs.
Eleanor Bradnock.

WALTON - Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Craig
returned last Thursday from a visit with the
latter's brother, Mr. Arthur Stewart of
Windsor, N.S. and his son and daughter-in--
law, Rev. • Donald and Mrs. Stewart, also
Mrs. Catherine Phinney and family all of
Aylesford, N.S.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Webster, Edmonton,
Alberta visited recently with Mr. and Mrs.
Ray Huether.
Ruth. Thamer of Woodstock spent two
days with her mother and other relatives.
The Walton Women's Institute meeting
was cancelled Wednesday evening due to a
death of a former resident of the village.
The W.I. will hold a noir luncheon this
Wednesday at the hall. Everybody is
welcome.
Duff's United
Recognition , Day of the UCW was
• observed at Duff's United Church, Sunday
morning when ladies formed the choir sing-
ing a couple of anthems accompanied by the
organist, Marion Godkin. Marjory Hum-
phries told the children's story. Scripture
lesson was read by Viola Kirkby. Karen
Hoegy led in prayer.
Helen Craig introduced the guest speaker,
Elizabeth Berkahan who spokeon Women in
the Church in New Zealand. The Berkahan
family is on an exchange with Susan White
and family.
Courtesy remarks were given by Maxine
Houston. Ushers were Margorie Fraser,
Margaret Craig, Margery Ritchie and
Melva Fraser.
Sunday, Nov. 4 is Laity Day. Men are ask-
ed to form the choir. There will be choir
practise Nov. 1 at 8:15. p.m.
4-H award
in honor of
Bill Mann
MONKTON - The Monkton 4-H Awards
Night and Banquet sponsored by the
Monkton Lion's Club was. held on October 15
at the Monkton Community Centre.
During the evening's activities the club in-
vited Mrs. Bill Mann, RR 1, Monkton to pre-
sent'a trophy donated by the Monkton Lions
in honor of her husband, William Mann, a
well-known dairy farmer in the area and
highly regarded for his knowledge in dairy
farming. The trophy will be presented year-
ly in Mr. Mann's name for the top ag-
gregate score in the Moncton4-H Dairy
Calf Club.
The trophy was awarded to Miss Kim Par-
tridge, daughter, of Mr. and Mrs. John Par-
tridge, RR 3, Monkton, who attained a total
of 914 marks out of a possible 1,000.
Afflicted last year by the disorder
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, commonly,
known as Lou Gehrig's disease, Mr. Mann
was unable to attend the awards night.
Prior to the presentation,' the newly
crafted trophy was delivered to the Mann
farm home located on Concession 16, Grey
Township by Morris Smith and Doug
McEwen, both members of the Monkton
Lion's Club. They made the official unveil-
ing for Mr. Mann and .announced the name
of this year's winner. The award will be
made annually.
Bill is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Archie
Mann, Listowel formerly of Grey Township
and the twin brother of Robert Mann, 80
Princess St., Clinton, his wife is the former
Mary Beth Baffin, RR 2, Moncton. The cou-
ple have two daughters, Tracy and Kendra,.
both at home.

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Harold
McClinchey on the occasion of their 35th
wedding anniversary recently.
Mr. and Mrs. Emerson Rodger visited for
a few days last week with their friends, Mr.
and Mrs. Ernie Pink at Stkatharines.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Davis of Bowman-
ville, New York visited for a few days last
weekend with her sister, Mrs. Donald
Haines and Mr. Haines.
Prize winners at last week's euchre party
sponsored by the Silver Tops every Tuesday
evening at 8 p.m. were; novelty, Jack
Hallam; high lady, Mrs. Adeline Allen; low
lady, Terri Wall; high man, Ross Robinson;
and low man, Mrs. Donald Haines. There
were seven tables in play.
Mr. and Mrs. Emerson Rodger were
guests last Saturday evening with Mr. and
Mrs. William Helesic and family in
Goderich.
Miss Christine Stadelmann of Blyth
visited on the weekend with her grand-
mother, Mrs. Eleanor Bradnock.
Mr. William Anderson of Newmarket
spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Oli'ker Anderson.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Schmidt of Goderich
visited on Sunday with Mrs. Tom Johnston
and Miss Laura Phillips.

McDougall and Mrs. Eleanor Bradnock at-
tended the Guelph Area Women's Institute
convention at Brussels last Thursday.
Mrs. Stanley McNall of Welland is visiting
with Mrs. Tom Johnston and Miss Laura
Phillips this week.
Mr. and Mrs. J.A. McIntosh of London
were guests on the weekend with Mrs.
Frances Clark.
Mrs. Tom Lawrence entertained relatives
last Sunday in honour of Tom's 66th birth-

Mr. Gary Shuttleworth spoke on the
theme - Just Enough, last Sunday at Knox
United Church with Mrs. Barry Millian as
organist. A duet was sung by Jake Mid-
dlecamp and Lori Millian. The Junior con-
gregation was in charge of Mrs. Glen
Webster and Miss Lori Millian. The ushers
were Lawrence Plaetzer, Barry Millian,
Murray Rollinson and Orval McPhee. It was
announced that there was an attendance of
75 at Sunday school and the students are
selling church calendars.
Funeral services were held on Monday,
October 22 for the late Mrs. Wilbert Taylor
OM passed -away October 19 at Huronview
in her. 980 year. • Her husband, Wilbert
Taylor passed away in 1968, She had lived
for many years in Auburn where they
retired from their farm in West Wawanosh.
She was the former Belva Mae Campbell.
She is survived by one -son, Ronald of Vic-
toria, B.C. and one daughter, Mrs. Ray
(Eileen) Hannah of R.R. 2, Auburn, seven
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Rev. Gordon Pickell assistant minister at
Knox United Church, Auburn conducted the
service at the Tasker Funeral Home, Blyth
with burial in Blyth Union Cemetery.
Pallbearers were five grandsons, Raymond,
Joe and Neil Hanna, Rick Humphreys and
Wayne and Ross Taylor.
Church News
Stalks of corn, vegetables, fruits and bou-
quets of chrysanthemums and fall flowers
decorated St. Mark's Anglican Church for
the Harvest Thanksgiving service last Sun-
day. The organist, Mrs. Murray Nesbit
played while the congregations of St. John's
Anglican Church, Brussels, Trinity
Anglican Church, Blyth and St. Mark's,
Auburn filled the sanctuary.
The service was in charge of the rector,
Rev. Robin Lyon assisted by Lay Reader,
Victor Stackhouse, Rev. William Craven of
Goderich and the guest speaker, The Rt.
Rev. William Townsend of London. Johnny
Nesbit of Blyth carried the Bishop's Staff.
St. Mark's Junior choir, Lana Lawrence,
Cathy Nesbit and Leslie Lawrence sang.
Trinity Church, Blyth sang a choral an-

Pray and Thank You Lord, accompanied by
Mrs. Linda Lentz. The members were
Nicole Richmond, Leah Richmond, Toni
Richmond, Michelle Nesbit, Marilyn
Mayberry and Kim Mayberry.
Rt. Rev. William Townsend chose for his
inspiring message the text -A man's life con-
sisteth not of the abundance of the things he
possesses. He was thankful for the oppor-
tunity to come to St. Mark's for this special
service and reminisced about his early
school days at Summerhill school where he
had passed his entrance exams in 1910. Rev.
Townsend urged all to thank God for the
abundant harvest, health and peace in this
land.• He remarked that a nation can not rise
above the level of its people so urged all to
bear witness to God in our daily lives.
Following the service the Sacrament of..
Holy ' Communion was observed with the
Brussels choir singing Open my Eyes Spirit
Divine. During the communion service,
Mark Stackhouse played Amazing Grace on
the violin as the combined choirs sang.
A dedication service took place dedicating
the new kneelers and front step carpet.
Following the service a reception and lunch
took place in the Auburn Community
Memorial Hall.

Ready, set, go! These girls show their determination in winning the midget cross-

and boys took part in the met. It was to be held the previous day, but poor weather condi-

UCW hear .of missionary ship
Unit 2 of Knox United Church Women met
for their October meeting at the. home of
Mrs. Donald Haines. Mrs. Emerson Rodger
and Mrs. Haines were in charge , of the .
meeting
Mrs. 14alines gave a paper on the Tom
Crosby Missionary Ship that operates on the
British Columbia coast.
The minutes were accepted as read by the.
secretary, Mrs. Jack Vincent. Business was
discussed .which included plans for lunch
after the church anniversary service.
Unit I of Knox United Church Women held
their October meeting in the Sunday school
room of the church last Tuesday evening.
The conveners of the meeting were Mrs.
Robert Worsell, Mrs. Dorothy Grange and
,Mrs. William Craig.
A worship service on Thanksgiving was
presented by the committee members and
Mrs. Marjorie McDougall Was pianist for
the singing of the hymn, "Come ye Thankful
People Come". A Thanksgiving Litany was
read in unison and . a meditation on
"Thankfulness" was given by Mrs. Dorothy
Grange.
Mrs. John Hildebrand was guest speaker
and showed slides of their recent trip to
Whitehorse in the Yukon. Her commentary
was very.informative and interesting. Mrs.-

her with a gift.
President Mrs. Ernest Durnin took charge
of the business part. The minutes and
reports were accepted and the visits with
the shut-ins were arranged. Members are
requested to knit children's mitts or touques
for A White Gift Tree in December.
The general meeting will be held' on Oc-
tober 24.
