County, the Huron Soil and Water Conservation District, in co-operation with the Huron Soil and Crop Improvement Association, is developing a list of peopple who have conservation tillage and planting equipment which they would be willing to make available to other farmers. The Equipment Availability List is being developed in an attempt to compile a ready reference of farmers who will make equip- ment available to others,,whether on a ren- tal basis, custom basis, or cost-sharing ar- rangement. This will allow persons interested in using a piece of equipment the opportunity to try it on their farm, their soil, and their residue and management system without the large capital expense involved in a direct pur- chase of this equipment. The equipment sharing concept may also allow the purchaser a piece of equipment (ie. chisel plow) to justify the initial cost as it will be used over a larger acreage than his own, and it may generate income for him from the associated rental fees. Custom operators will also be compiled who are interested in such conservation tillage or planting operations as custom chisel plowing, no -till planting, soil -saving ridge planting or ridge forming. If you are interested in having your name added to the Conservation Equipment Availability File, please contact Robert Traut at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food office in Clinton, at 482-3428 or 1- 800-265-7044. Among those on hand to hear Ontario Treasurer Larry Grossman in Exeter, Friday, were former Ontario treasurer Charlie MacNaughton and his wife, Addle. Bryan Smith, right, PC candidate for the Huron—Middlesex riding, enjoys a light moment being sharedby Ontario Treasurer Larry Grossman and Clinton residents Ken and Don- na Wood following the party's meet -the -candidate Hight in Exeter, Friday. Nomination meeting turns into PC wake EXETER - What had been scheduled as an election rally turned out to bemore of an old-fashioned wake at the South Huron rec centre, on October 19. With good food, good drinks and about 250 good Progressive Conservative friends on hand, Ontario Treasurer Larry Grossman led in the lamentations and eulogy for the "departed". The departed in this case was Premier William Davis, whose surprise retirement announcement came at the time he was fully expected to call a general election. That put a bit of a damper on the Friday proceedings which had been planned as an election campaign event for Huron -Middlesex riding candidate Bryan Smith. While Grossman was broad in his hints that he would be a candidate for the leadership of the party, he left that directly unstated during the apparent period of mourning in which the contenders have engaged. In urging the party faithful to continue patronage of the bar to increase tax revenue, Grossman said he plans to be treasurer "or something else" after the next SCRIMGEOUR'S FOOD MARKET MAIN STREET, BLYTH Friendly Courtesy QUALITY SERVICE PRICE \ C.arry Out Service STORE HOURS: Mon., Toes, Wod, Sol. 8.30 o,m•8 p. m Thur,, Fri. 870 em•9 p o,. He said he was among the majority caught completely off guard by the Premier's retirement announcement on Thanksgiving Day, saying there was no moment . he would recall more vividly, despite the varied highlights of his nine years in political life. "These were sad moments for us," he said, reporting that Davis had made the announcement at the point of tears and in a shaking voice. "This wasfar more than a colleague saying goodbye, it was a close friend," the Treasurer explained. Continuing in his eulogy, Grossman described the Premier as a man of compassion with a sense of fair play and an understanding of the needs and demands of all the people in the province. While admitting that the resignation will create a difficult time for. the nasty. the speaker said that Davis has demanded that each member get on with the renewal and shaping of the new era in the traditionally smooth exchange of power between old and new leaders of the party which has ruled On- tario for 41 years under four premiers. Turning his attention to fulfilling the role for which he had ' been initially engaged, Grossman said that Smith was one of the many examples of the qualified people who havebeen selected at nomination meetings for the PCs. It was noted that in ridings not held by the government, the PC nominations have attracted large crowds and the candidates have not just been "thrown in at the .last moment" as tokens in the election which has now been delayed.. "They are superb candidates like the man you've picked to carry the colors," the diminutive politician said, adding that it is up to the voters of Huron -Middlesex to choose whether they want to be part of molding the policy and strategy of the future or to be content with sitting on the opposition benches tossing out criticisms. "We want to put the riding back where it once was," he challenged, urging voters to "join us in that great voyage through Bryan Smith". Grossman said during his speech he'd be willing to bet on the outcome of the next election, notwithstanding the opinions of Liberal MPP Jack Riddell that a vote for Smith would not ensure the riding would have a member on the side of the government. It was the only foray into any political bantering in the address which kept the audience sitting on their hands in keeping with the atmosphere of a.wake. The most controversial topic of the night appeared to centre around the number of pieces of pie eaten by Smith's campaign manager, fellow Lucan resident Mert Culbert. In a brief 'comment, Culbert said that Smith "may be squirrelly, but he's a winner". The candidate advised that he has been enthused by the support shown him to date and he has met many people who share his dedication and desires for the PC party in the riding. Riding. .president Tom Jasper lauded Smith's ability and cited his potential to be a hard worker who will get to Queen's Park. The Goderich man also noted that the next six months will be an interesting time for the party with the leadership race and Smith's campaign. The PC association hopes to attract as many of the leadership hopefuls as possible to the riding before the January convention.
