Clinton firemen were called out far the
fifth time in less than a week to a major fie
when flames raced through a barn on the
farm of Terry Taylor, two miles east of Clin-
ton on Highway 8.
The barn, 325 pigs, and a quantity of feed
were lost in thee late evening blaze that com-
pletely levelled the large two storey barn.
Damage could run as high as $65,000 in the
fire that had completely. engulfed the struc-
ture when the Clinton volunteerire brigade
arrived shortly after 10 p.m.
In this, our International Year of the
Child, October has been declared Block
Parent' Month. At the present time,
Vanastra has 20 Block Parents, ,and
although some people may feel that this is
an adequate number, it should be the aim of
the program to try and increase the
membership.
A great percentage of the community is
made up of children and there can never be
too much protection provided on their
behalf.
As it does every year, the first snowfall
catches many motorists with their guards
down, and gives the OPP lots of work. Oc-
tober 17 was no exception as three inches
blanketed the area. Although the snow
melted in less than an hour, it caused $2,000
damage to three cars in an accident just
west of Clinton on Highway 8.

plans for construction of a shopping plaza in
Goderich Township if the company still has
plans to do so. Goderich spokesman for
Rockledge, Gord Smith confirmed the
report in a brief telephone conversation
Wednesday.

rink at RCAF Station, Clinton were an-
nbunced today by Group Captain K.Cr:

tion. •
The building will contain an 80 by 180 foot
ice surface and will be complete with four

toilet facilities. It will be erected on the nor-
theast area of the station property near the
present tennis courts and married quarters.

Town council came through another ses-
sion of talking about water mains on Tues-
day night, without either the councillors nor
L.G. Winter reaching any satisfactory solu-
tion concerning the new homes Mr. Winter
wants to build.
A wood -cutting bee was held at the farm of
the late Walter Johnston on Thanksgiving
afternoon when neighbors and friends from.
the -district provided ha: family with a good
year's supply of wood.
About 35 men arrived . with all the
maohinery and implements necessary for d
felling • the trees, tilt ening, cutting, an
hauling them from the bush to, the yard.
Before they left, the cellar was filled with

Some very fine apples have been on
display in the store windows in town the past
week. In O'Neil's grocery, some spies,
grown by Mr. C.B. Middleton, Goderich
Township, have been catching the eye of all
passersby.
Often the complaint has been heard that
we in Huron County seldom see the best fruit
grown in the county, it being shipped away
and only scrub fruit being displayed for sale
here. This is not the case this year as the
best is being displayed for sale.
Clinton has quite a clever dog, one who
can carry dispatches. It is the big police dog
belonging to Mr. Nickerson of the Rural
Hydro. When Mr. Nickerson is going out of
town and wants to send a message home, or
to send the dog home, he gives him a note to
carry, and off he trots with it in his mouth,
not swerving from his path until he delivers
it to his mistress at home.
Members of the Clinton Public School
Board recently put in a surprise fire alarm
at the Public School to test the effectiveness
of fire drill in the school. One minute after
the first gong of the bell, all pupils were
safely outside. In three minutes the
students, who number over 200, were back
at their desks again.

The Dominion Fruit Inspectors, Mr. R.T.
Rutherford of Colborne, Jas Byran of
Lucknow and W: Ferminger . of St.
Catharines are in town. The .government is
serious. in the pattern of apple packing, and
the regulations relating thereto will be en-
forced to the letter.
With one or two exceptions, the men were
satisfied with the packing in town, but left a
reminder that the fruit must be packed pro-
perly.
Owing to the rough weather on Tuesday
and Wednesday, the Bayfield Fair was not a
decided success this year. Directors even
went as far as cancelling the Citizen's Band
which was to play Wednesday morning.

Mr. W.H. Cooper of Clinton, won first

on: Friday. Mr. Jones and Mr. Johnston took
first prize for horse shoes at the fair.
Enough money has been raised to pay for
the erection of a new school •house for St.
Paul's Church and the other improvements
contemplated. Raising the money by
subscription were Mr. W. Jackson, Mr.
R.M. Racey and Rev. W. Craig. The work

3. Make a hole for each plant with a stick.
4. Lower the plants into the bottle by using the
two sticks like chopsticks.
5. Water the plants lightly.

will need watering every two or three months.
Take the lid off every now and then to let fresh
