Gardeners see nature slides

Nature's Last Stand on Point Pelee and
interesting slides of Guatemala were shown
by George Harrower at the Blyth
Horticultural Society meeting on October 9.
President Harvey McDowell welcomed
members and guests to the meeting.
Minutes were read by secretary Mrs. Ted
East. The financial statement was given by
treasurer Mrs. Bert Fear.
Dan McInnes showed his finished hooked
rug which he had recently completed.
The door prize winners were Mrs. Pitman,
John Blake; Mary Campbell, Reta Blake,
Vera Hesselwood, Mrs. Harrower, Mary
Holland, Sheron Stadelmann and Mr.
Harrower. Lunch was served by Mr. and
Mrs. John Blake.
Euchre
Euchre was played at the Blyth Memorial
Hall with nine tables in play.
The winners were: High Lady, Edna
Hackwell of Seaforth; High Man, Ted Mills
of Auburn; Low Lady, Marg McDougall •of
Auburn; Low Man, Joe Holmes; Ladies'
Lone Hands, Hazel Reed of Londesboro;
Men's Lone Hands, Leonard Shobbrook;
Special, Ruby Dolmage of Seaforth.
Euchre is played weekly and everyone is
welcome to attend.

The Indies of the Blyth Women's Institute
' met on October 4 in the Blyth Memorial
Hall. Lenora Davidson gave a report of the
Institute rally held in Wingham on October
1. Anne McInnis gave a reading and
Margaret Brooks gave two readings.
Speaker for the evening was Bill Bromley
of Londesboro. .Murray Cook of Clinton
accompanied the speaker showing slides of,
what happens in the home when electrical
hazards are present, and not looked after.
Bill noted that, frayed cords or hot
extension cords can burn.
Don't, forget the next meeting on
November 1. The speaker for this month is
someone from the conservation office.
CWL support women's group
On October 2, nine members of St.
• Michael's Catholic Women's League met at
the home of Joanne Campschroer.
It was decided to give any suitable articles
and clothing that were left over from 'the
garage sale to the Women in Transition
group in Goderich. A cheque for $50 will also
be sent.
On Octobes 10 the' deanery meeting was
'held at St. Peter's Church in Goderich.
Crucifixes will .be bought for two
upcoming marriages in the church.
A donation of $20 will be sent to Blyth
Minor Sports.

Illy Inions help with MeDonal ho
BLYTH - The Blyth Lions held their
regular meeting at the Blyth Memorial Hall
on October 11. Twenty-four Lions were
served a delicious roast beef dinner • by the
Catholic Women's League.
The Blyth Lions Club will be participating
in a Brick Selling Campaign to raise money
for the new Ronald McDonald House being
built in London. This House is a place where
pa -rents of children being treated for cancer
related illnesses can live for a few days
while the child is undergoing the treatment.
The total cost of the Ronald McDonald
House is approximately $900,000. McDonald
Restaurants have donated $250,000 and the
balance is being raised through various
projects. Members of the Blyth Lions Club,
along with -Lions Clubs in the area, will be
selling certificates which represent bricks
ata cost of $5 each.
Earlier this year the Blyth Lions Club
pledged $2,000 towards the installation of
dehumidification units, air conditioning and
se
heat pumps at the Blyth and Disttriet
Community Centre. It was decided that the
first installment of $1,000 will be paid at this
time.
District A9 Governor Orbin Eickmeier
from Mildmay and District Lions Club will
be making his official visit at tl�e October 25
meeting.
The Blyth Lions Club Annual Halloween
Dance will be held at the Community Centre
on Saturday, October 27.
Musical evening celebrates McCalls' 40th
To celebrate their 40th wedding
anniversary, Jim and Effie McCall held
Open House at the Blyth Community Centre
on September 28.
Neighbor Wilfred Shortreed presided over
the Guest Book which showed that close to
200 came to extend congratulations to the
bride and groom of September 30, 1944, to
enjoy a fine program, to eat, dance and be
friendly.
Lloyd Walden was M.C. for the program.
With his opening jovial remarks, he set the
mood for the night. Melda McElroy, in her
informal address, sketched highlights in
Jim and Effie's life from the time Jim, an
air force trainee, stationed at Monkton, N.B.
met Effie Nelson, a nurse in Toronto, at a
party at The Rocks in N.B. Effie happened
to be home on vacation. Their courtship
proved that absence makes the heart grow
fonder, for their marriage took place one
year later in St. Columban church, Toronto.
The only member of the bridal party able
to attend this anniversary was Frank
Waechter.
George Cowan sang two songs, the words
and music of which were composed by Jim.
They were "By the Sea of Galilee" and
"Come Holy Spirit", Hazel Dalrymple was
piano accompanist. Karl McNaughton of
Lucan played a violin number, with Mildred
Tubb of Mitchell accompanist. Music for
dancing was supplied by the Wilbee family
five piece orchestra of Walton.
Dorothy Van Steelandt, a close neighbor,
gave congratulatory remarks and presentee

Effie, an ardent quilter, chose friends
from her quilting club to assist in this
celebration. Dorothy Daer and Bernice
McClinchey served refreshments during the
early evening reception and Lillian Riehl,
with the help of her family, was responsible
for the smorgasbord dinner served at 11:30
m.

Susan Buffinga and family of RR 1, Blyth
and son David McCall and his family of
Lambeth.

Effie's sisters, Mrs. Bernice Newcombe and
Mrs. Paul Wallace of Hillsborough, N.B. and
niece, Mrs. Henry McDermitt and Mr.
McDermitt of Mississauga; Ross McCall of
Carleton Place, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Bush of
Toronto, and George and Doris Cowan of
Chatham.
Personals
Mary Young is out of hospital, having
suffered from a bout of pneumonia. She is at
present with her daughter, Betty Lair. Her
husband Archie is a guest at the Ramaloo
Nursing Home.
Happy 80th
Harvey Sillib celebrated his 80th birthday
on October 11 with his son and other moose
hunters in the region South. West of Sudbury
at Estaire, 12 miles back in the bush.
There was no water, no hydro but rocks
and scenery to no end. Harvey 'returned
home on October 13.

The fifth meeting of the Waist Watchers
was held at Eunice Emke's on October 10.
Women in sports and food for sport was
discussed. It was decided that the members
would go bowling on October 17 as the
Fitness Meet.
Summaries of the special projects were
presented by the senior members. The
members prepared and sampled the
Macaroni, Cheese and Tomato.
