Clinton News-Record, 1984-10-03, Page 26Old friends and regular patrons were at the Kum -In Restaurant on September 28 to bid
Blossom and Lorne Garrow (left) a fond farewell. After 22 years in business, the Gar -
rows have closed their Clinton Main Street business. Pearl Tideswell and Buster
Johnston, on behalf of 19 regulars from the morning coffee gang presented the Garrows

Many of the regular pans said goodbye
to the Kum -In on its final day. "It was a
very emotional day," said proprietors
Lorne and Blogiorti Garrow.
The Garrows are a well-known Clinton
couple and their restaurant was in business
for more than two decades.
Lorne was born in Windsor, then moved to
Holmesville at the age of 14. His first job
come a year later, cooking at the Commer-
cial Hotel in Clinton. Until he was 25, he
cooked at various other places. Then he
opened the Kum -In with Blossom.
Blossom was born in Toronto and raised in
Newmarket. When she was 15 she moved to
Goderich. She met Lorne on iehe Square.
They married three years later.
When the Kum -In opened, 22 years ago,
there were many other restaurants in
business: Ruby and Bill's (that evolved into
the Elm Haven), Bartliff's, the Mhay Mee,
the Clinton Hotel, Debbie's Custard (which
was a drive-in at the time), and Dorothy
Hymer's snack bar.
Business fared well over the years despite
the. competition. In 1962, the restaurant's
first year, the Kum -In had customers from
the Base. That was the year that it had the
greatest customer turnover. But, after the
Base was no longer being used, the business
managed to prosper over the years.
"Eating habits," Lorne observed, "have
changed from big meals to fast food. I

What
will Lorne and Blossom be"doing
now? "We'd like to live in this area. Our
years in Clinton have been good to us. But it
depends where the job is."
Even if the Garrows leave the area there
will always be a warm spot for them in the
hearts of many, accompanied by a silent
aching for the warmth of the Kum -In.
