CLINTON , The traditional Harvest Home
Festival has always been one of the most
joyful celebrations of the year at St. Paul's
Anglican Church in Clinton. Seldom has this
been more apparent than at the annual ser-
vice, held on September 30.
Members of the Chancel Guild decorated
the church withe the warmth of autumn col-
ors, with tall stocks of corn, bright pum-
pkins and, baskets of fruit and flowers.
The Reverend Gordon Simmons welcome
the guest priest, the Reverend James
Broadfoot, who was the incumbent at St.
Paul's from 1978 to 1982, and is now at St.
Tragically, disease and high rates of infant
mortality invariably accompany hunger.
The futures of children and young people
suffering from insufficient food are severely
compromised even if death; is not an im-
mediate threat. The ability to learn is reduc-
ed, the capacity to resist illness is weakened
and personal growth is hindered.
Take a moment on World Food Day, Oc-
tober 16, to consider some of the issues that
affect food production here and in the Third
World.

GUELPH — University of Guelph pro-
fessor Harold "Harry" Cummings, 37, has
been named director of the- University's
$42.2 million Sulawesi Project, a rural
development undertaking involving the
governmentsof Indonesia and Canada.
The son of Frank Cummings of Clinton,
the Guelph professor's experience in
Sulawesi dates back to 1976 when he began
working with the Canadian International
Development -Agency (CIDA) on the
preliminary study for the current project.
Project ' costs for the five year project are
being shared between the two countries with
CIDA providing the Canadian loan and
grant funds.
Harry Cummings graduated from Central
Huron Secondary School where teacher
Ross Middleton sparked an interest in
geography that has led to a life's work. He
then attended the University of Western On-
tario for his Bachelor's degree and Clark
University in Massachusetts for Master's
and PH.D. degrees in geography.
Prof. Cummings explains that the Univer-
sity of Guelph's Indonesian project will help
strengthen local and provincial planning
agencies and train local people on the island
of Sulawesi. Special emphasis is being plac-
ed on improving the position of women and
on enlarging the role of non-governmental

attend the Blyth Horticultural Society
meeting on October 9. The meeting will
feature slides of Guatemala.
Members were reminded of the
November meeting in Clinton when the late
John Plumtee's floral slides will be shown.
The president expressed a hearty thank
you to all the members who planted and
maintained the flower beds throughout Clin-
ton. She noted that the beds were particular-
ly beautiful this year and these faithful
gardeners deserve much credit.

speaker, Doris Hunter of Bayfield. Her
presentation was Flowers - Myths, Magic
and Meaning. Kit McKnight thanked Mrs.
Hunter for her enlightening and historical
account of familiar flowers.
Mrs. Williams reported on the Hor-
ticulture Convention, held in June in Sud-
bury, which she and Effie Stephenson at-
tended. Some interesting items reported
were that it was in 1934 that the trillium was
chosen as Ontario's emblem, and that there
is an experimental vegetable garden being
grown in a mine in that area at the 5,600 foot
level.
The hyacinth bulbs for either indoor or
outdoor planting were available from Gwen
Johnson. Members were also reminded of
the Mystery Bus Trip on October 9.

ENGAGEMENT
Mr. and Mrs. David McClinchey of
Auburn wish to announce the forthcoming
marriage of their daughter Lorraine Ruth

Franken and the late John Franken of
Auburn.
The wedding will take place Saturday,

agencies. A six -person on-site Canadian
team will work closely with local officials on
strengthening planning institutions at every
level from disstricv through provincial and
central government.
Sulawesi is almost twice the size of New-
foundland, but the Guelph project involves
only the southern half of the island. In-
tegrated development projects to be carried
out in a small section of each province will
serve as models for planning in such areas
as health care, water management and crop
diversification.
The governments of Indonesia and
Canada have realized for some years the
potential for development of the large but
little developed island in the 3,000 member
archipelago. Development in the moun-
tainous area has always been difficult
because of isolated settlement patterns,
weak local economies and poor marketing
opportunities. As a result, rural incomes in
Sulawesi are only 70 per cent of the national
average.
Marion and Harry Cummings, their sons
Jeremy and Alain will Maintain their base
in Guelph. However, Prof.. Cummings will
make an annual trip to Sulawesi to review
development activities with the Indonesian
government.
