The residents of Huron County have the
benefits 4f a fine organization whteb has the
considerable responsibility to help care for
those unable to care for themselves as its
charge, •
The part-time employees of Town and
Country Homemakers serve the county in
this much needed capacity, helping
residents with temporary ailments or those
with terminal illnesses by doing jobs like
light house cleaning, shopping, assisting
with meal planning or helping with personal
care.
Temporary clients usually have short
term illnesses, a broken limb for example,
or family circumstances dictate the need for
additional help. The agency just recently ac-
cepted chronic care patients as well, which
accounts for a dramatic rise in cases.
The organization has a dual nature. Cases
are assessed by doctors and nurses and the
number of hours needed are estimated by
the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) for
that organization and Town and Country
Homemakers. Patients receive the assessed
hours free of charge and any extra time is
billed at $6.75 per hour.
The company tries to maintain a number
of private clients, currently at about 60 per
cent, to help fund the time dedicated to pet):
ple not charged for help. A fall fund-raising
campaign is. also underway with a goal of
$50,000. Brochures with the slogan "Help
keep a good home going" will be sent
throughout the county.
Estelle Wise was one of the students in the
original • homemaking course started by
Conestoga college in 1971. Of those first 17
students in the 12 -week course, she
estimates two or three are still involved.
"We were originally working through the
program (at Conestoga College), then Town
and Country was set up. The homemakers.
went to it and now if the home care course
needs someone they contact the agency,;'
said Estelle, The work which centered
around Clinton, Goderich and Seaforth
spread until the entire county was covered
by the organization which was incorporated
in.1978.
"I like working with people. I prefer work-
ing with older people, I think they're a little
more appreciative of anything you do for
them."

Estelle ,aid there. isn't a tical
homet'aker s. day. "Every case you'go into
l3 different' she explained. "Often, some
people nee0more personal care. It depends
1
wbat they're capable of on.their own."
Sometimes there is very little to work with
in a client's hoarse which can cause extra
work for the home care worker. "But some
people don't have much. They can't help
that." -
The Hoimesville woman says she doesn't
mind working with terminal cases though
some homemakers may not'be quite as com-
fortable with these patients.
"There's no question. you get attached,
I've been with an older couple for almost a
yea'. You almost become a member of the
faintly. '
And to a person living alone, you might
be the only person they see for the whole
dal."
The agency provides inservice programs
as educational tools for the employees.
Estelle finds there beneficial.
"1 enjoy them very much, the ones I've
been able to attend. Attendance is not as
good as it could be. I think they're missing
something if they don't attend."
Joyce Irwin of Clinton also works for
Town and Country Homemakers. Her
former position was terminated about four
years ago but she still wanted to work part-

"I heard about it, so I thought I'd give it a
try. Some people try to get 40 hour's in but I
like time off tp.do my own thing.
Joyce agreed there isn't a typical
homemaker's day.
"It depends on the type of home care.
Sometimes we work with the paitent or find
something to do in the house to help out."
Joyce hasn't had many problems with
some home conditions. "Every home's dif-
ferent. 1 haven't had much trouble that way.
Sometimes the woman is ill and the man is
trying to do a job and keep the home going,
too."
She finds it difficult at times to disen-
tangle herself from cases. Some patients
don't seem to understand visits as a home
care worker require authorization from the
head office in Wingham.
"It doesn't hfu't to enquire about them.
Some ask for visits and I go if there's time
but often there isn't."
Joyce doesn't have to do much travelling
to c'lient's homes. They are in town airs this
can cause some'uneo >rtfortable situation l
"in town it's sometimes quite difficult; If
you know the people quit well.it's hal to
see them when they're ill• Some pow you
know personally and you f>;,gure:, you
shouldn't take the case."
Joyce finds the programs offered byTown
and Country, consisting of tapes and/or
speakers, to be of assistance.
"You get talking to others to see how they
cope with problems and there is general
discussion.
"You need to be refreshed perlodicallY•
They (Town and Country) make changes,
the government makes changes and you
have to bee informed of that."
Both women agree the rewards outweigh
the problems. Knowing the difficulties and
Pain have been alleviated, even just slight-
ly, carries with it a quiet satisfaction.
"Yes, you have the satisfaction of helping
someone get better, or to help themselves,
or make chronic patients as comfortable as
possible," said Joyce.
