Naturally Speaking
There is- a brand new magazine on the
newsstand that should be of great interest to
hunters. Called "Hunting Guns" and pro-
duced by Jim Carmichael and Outdoor Life,
it's chock full of bare bones information that
cuts through all the excess information
usually printed these days and gets down to
basic facts.
For instance, have you ever wondered
how much your rifle actually "kicks"? It
depends on a lot of variables, but for exam-
ple, a 30-06 produces free recoil measuring
about 20 ft./lbs. Compare that to a .243 Win.
at 10 ft./lbs., the 7 x 57 Mauser at 15 ft./lbs.,
the 7 mm Rem. Mag. at 25 ft./lbs., and the
.300 Win. Mag. at 32 ft./lbs. The .375 H & H
Magnum produces free recoil at 47 ft./lbs.,
while the .458 measures in at 63 ft./lbs. The
big daddy of them all, on Rick La Rocco's
scale, is the .460 Weatherby Magnum, which
weighs in at a whopping 148 ft./lbs.
A 71 pound 12 gauge shotgun with a 23/4
dram equivalent charge behind 11/a oz. of
shot produces 17.4 ftflbs. of free recoil
energy, or about the same as a .308 Win-
chester. A 3 inch magnum with 1'/8 oz. of
shot in an 81/2 lb. gun hits you with 47.7
ft./lbs., the same as a .375 II & H Magnum.
If you wart to find out just how much
recoil your individual gun produces, just
follow these steps: (1) Measure the powder
charge in grains and divide by 7000. (2)
Multiply the result of Step 1 by 1.75 if the
bullet velocity at the muzzle is equal to or
greater than 2500 fps. If the muzzle velocity
is less than 2500 fps., multiply by 1.5 - but
don't round out these figures. (3) Weigh the
bullet or the shot charge plus the wad in
grains and divide by 7000. (4) Add the result
of Step 3 to the result of Step 2. (5) Multiply
the result of Step 4 by the bullet velocity at
By Steve Cooke
the muzzle in feet per second. (6) Multiply
the result of Step 5 by itself. (7) Weigh your
gunin pounds, and multiply the weight by
64.348. (8) Take the result of Step 5 and
divide it by the result of Step 7 for the
answer.
But that's just a little bit of the inform. -
tion contained in one article.
There is a 32 page section devoted entirely
to reloading, and there is an independent ar-
ticle on loading with the economical Pak
tools.
Something that should interest deer
hunters is a write up on using slugs for deer.
It runs through the results of using different
brands of slugs in different action types, and
points out some of the difficulties and pro-
blems you might encounter.
We also have articles with titles like, "The
Truth About Bullet Behavior", "The Non -
thinking Man's Trajectory Table", "Guns
That Stop Bears", "How To Pattern Your
Shotgun" and "The Complete Bird Shooter's
Guide". There is even an article by Pat
McManus, that is a tongue in cheek ap-
proach on how to buy a gun and get it into
the house without your wife knowing about
it.
All in all it's one of the best magazines
I've seen for quite a while. Look for it on
newsstands. It's called "Hunting Guns" and
costs $2.50.
+++
The draw for the Controlled Deer Hunt in
Huron County has been made. The results
were mailed out the first of this week, so you
should hear by Friday. If you haven't heard
by next Wednesday, chances are you didn't
get drawn. Good luck to all those people who
do get tags.
