By Sheron Stadelmann June,., Taylor of Goderich attended a ial meeting of the Blyth UCW Evening nit on September 26. The meeting, attended by women from various Blyth churches, looked at the pro- blems of wife abuse in Huron County. Mrs. Taylor represented the group Women m Transition. She showed a film and led in a discussion on wife battering. She stressed that importance of seeking help for the husbandRR wan ae the wife Mary WI Stewart welcomed everyone $4 the meeting. Janice Henry had the 1UekY coffee mug and received a Cabbage Path outfit, donated by Mrs. Taylor. In other business, it was reported that plans for the Harvest Bonanza are wen underway. Donations of articles are Most welcome. UCW members were reminded that the October 31 meeting will be held one hour later, because of Hallowe'en. Skating season Fearing up By Sheron Stadelmann Blyth Figure and Power Skating and Minor Sports Clubs are already busy with preparations for their Skate-a-thon and Old Timers Tournament, to be held in November. The business community is being asked to help finance ice rental and other expenses. The fund raising committee report that the response from local businesses has been positive. A list of all the businesses involved will be nneteri at the arena for both events. It is hoped that the children will be well received when they request sponsors for the Skate -a -thou. Local people are also asked to support the events bycoming out to see the youngsters and oldsters raise money so that children m the Blyth area may have a successful winter sports season. The Skate-a-thon will be held on November 3 and the hockey tournament is November 16, 17 and 18. Lions win euchre tourney Two Blyth Lions teams competed in the Londesboro Lions Euchre Tournament on September 29. The foursome of Alex Donaldson, Rudy • Leibold, Gerald Kerr and Harold Cook finished third. The Blyth Lions Club held their regular meeting on September 27 'at the Memorial Hall. The Legion Ladies Auxiliary served the men a turkey dinner. The Lions operate a food booth, hospitali-a ty room and a beef barbecue at the Steam Threshers' Reunion in September. A profit of $2,600 was realized. The money will be returned to the com- munity through projects, sponsored by the local Lions Club and Lions Clubs Interna- tional. A $300 donation was made to the Blyth FigureSkating Club. The Blyth Lions Club will be participating in the Lions District A9 Brick Buying Cam- paign, to raise money for the new Ronald MacDonald House in London. The Blyth Lions Hallowe'en Dance will be held Saturday, October 27 at the Blyth and District Community Centre. The Lions Christmas Dances will be held Saturday, December 8 and Saturday, December 15, also at the Community Centre. The local Lions Club was formed in 19 1.. It is now in its 40th year of service to the com- munity. Anniversary celebrations are being planned for the spring of 1985. People-, report Uniteds welcome young member The Blyth United Church congregation witnessed the baptism of Christopher An- dre, son of Dan and Anita Lammerant on September 30. Many members of the Lam- merant family attended the service. Being reconciled to Christ and to one another in the church family was the main thrust of the morning message. The senior - choir sang under the leadership of Margaret Kai. Greeters were Earl Fyfe and Harvey Snell. Ushers were Terry and Barbara Rich- mond and Jim and Ron Howson. 4-H news The third meeting of the 4-H Waist Wat- chers was held at Eunice Emke's on September 26. The members' mothers at- tended. 4-H members ran a mile. Later they discussed low fat cooking and prepared chili con carne. It was served with baked potatoes and fruit custard. The fourth meeting will be held on Oc- tober 3. The Blyth II 4-H Club held their second meeting at the home of Karen Stewart on September 26. They chose the Scale Busters as their club name. Members were shown how to determine body composition. Afterwards everyone sampled pita bread, corn chowder and split pea soup. News and notes The first evening of euchre was held in the Memorial Hall on September 24 with eight tables in play. Winners were: high scores, Lilly Letherland of Auburn and Marg Mc- Cullough; o-Cullough; lone hands, Reta Watt and Gor- don Murray of Walton; low scores, Marg Shobbrook and Mike Cunimings of Brussels. Euchre matches are held every Monday night. Happy birthday wishes go out to Stewart Ament who is celebrating his birthday on October 9. Don't forget - industrial hockey begins Oc- tober 21. The 32 Holstein cat- tle were well received by the buyers from across the province and a strong average of $1,736 was reached. Topping the sale at $5,300.00, was Twinlea Prestar Lulu -Red G.P., a February '82 Prestar daughter with a 2y 135d record of 2,938 kg milk, 124 kg fat, 4.2 percent test and projected BCA of 144-168. Her Ex dam had 3y BCA of 162-166 and 2nd dam was VG. She sold, bred since June to Romandale Regal Red, to Kenneth A. Baker, Elginburg, On- tario. • A VG November '80 daughter from a Starlite son sold for $3,800 to Phoenix Bros., Greenbank, Ontario. She has a projected 3y BCA at 172 days•of 157-181. Her Ex dam had a best BCA of 176-172 and her 2nd dam was classified VG. She sold bred since May to Romandale Regal Red.
