Increased interest rates are causing hard-
ships for many farmers and will eventually
lead to a decline in productivity, Peter Han-
nam, President of Ontario Federation of
Agricutlure told the Pine Ridge Branch of
Ontario Institute of Agrologisits recently.
Hannam said the increase in prime rates
from 81/4 per cent in early 1978 to 13 per cent
today is costing farmers am estimated $70 -
million in extra interest charges on short
term loans alone.

The summer of 1974 was the best ever for
Clinton Kinsmen Raceway, according to
figures released this week. Many new
records were either brokenor re-
established in many departments at the
raceway in the 13 week program this year.
In the mutuel department, a total of
$834,090 was bet on the programs, or an
average bet of $64,161 per program. In 1973,
which was also a record year, $752,560 or
$57,889 per program was be .
Frost early Monday and Tuesday morning
caused some damage in tlie Clinton area,
according to agricultural pokesmen, but
not in the $1 -million range as vegetable
growers suffered in Norfolk, Essex and
Kent Counties.
With a few snow flurries early Monday
morning, the temperature dipped to the
freezing mark, and spotty damage was
caused to the area's corn crop, which in
some fields is two to three weeks behind in
maturity.

During the month of August there were 35
births and two deaths with a total of 203 in-
patients. There were 14. major surgical
operations and 74 minor ones; 66 chest X-
rays, 78 other X-rays and nine fluoroscopy.
Out-patients treated in the emergency ward
totalled 91. This was the biggest month- so
far for lab work with 533 units done, accor-
ding to superintendent Miss Hilda Smith.
Hensall Community Agricultural School
▪ Fair was held this past Friday night at the
Memorial Centre. Eight -hundred people
were in attendance. On Saturday morn-
ing, the Bannockburn Pipe Band led the
Loyal' Orange lodge in their annual parade
through the village of Varna before going to
St. Marys where they joined the other lodges
of Huron and Perth in celebrations there.

An attempt. was made on Sunday night to
break into Sutter, Perdue and Walker's
hardware store. Someone had been making
areal effort to force the back door, prying it
with some sharp instrument, but the strong
bar held and they gave up the attempt. A.se-
cond and stronger bar will probably be plac-
ed above the one which did 'such good ser-
vice nn this occasion.
The seven school fairs held in Huron Coun-
ty this year were very successful when con-
sidered from every angle. There was More
general interest displayed on the part of the
pupils, the attendance was larger than last
year and there was a marked increase in the
number of entries. . •
• Ashfield Twp. had 879 people compared to
last year's figure of 308; Belgrave had 1348
people compared to 1158; Grand Bend 615 to
520; Howich Twp. 941 to 744 and St. Helens,
901 to 704.
Farming and gardening, contrary to the
idea of some, that they are dull,
uninteresting jobs, are in reality full of
adventure. You plant your seed and trust to
luck, or the purity of the seed, that they will
reproduce their kind, and they usually do.
But sometimes there's a surprise in store,
as was the case with Mr. Howard Shob-
brook, who bought some tomato plants last
spring, and one of them sent out yellow
blossoms, which developed into prickly seed
pods. The whole plant being covered with
sharp prickles, like a gigantic thistle. He is
sending it to Guelph to have it named.

Last Friday evening, Morrish and Croods,
the .big Clothiers and Furnishers had their
fall opening for the citizens and people of the
surrounding country.
The windows were dressed in city style,
and inside the store, flowers and foliage was
to be seen in profusion. The outside of the
store was illuminated with colored electric
lights.
The Clinton orchestra supplied a varied
program for over two hours and added
much to the enjoyment of all present.
Few men can compare with Robert Rose.
Although about 99 years of age, he is active-
ly engaged in farm work every day and is as
clear headed as many 30 years his junior.
Last Friday three rinks of bowlers went to
Seaforth and had a friendly game of bowls
but lost the round by two shots.

Lost - A counterfeit $4 -bill, Dominion of
Canada, was lost last week by a gentleman.
It is said the bill was previously sold for $2
and sent floating to the public. The loser got
the bill in change.
A valuable spring colt, belonging to Henry
Brandon of Belgrave, ate a surfeit of oats
which was left in a box by the threshers, and
died from the effects.
