Box 400 Clinton, Ontario NOM 1 LO Your interest is appreciated By James Friel BLYTH - Denny is a small town girl. Her boyfriend, Snag, has been in Edmonton for a year and she spends her time helping her mother at the Commodore, the local hotel. Another snowy Friday night is on the way... Denny is a character in the Blyth Festival hit Country Ijearts and is played by young actor Denise Kennedy, recreating the role she played in the 1982 production. The current production of Country Hearts is a revamped version of the well received 1982 offering and has been enthusiastically supported. "There have been rewrites and it's a bet- ter script," said Denise. Following auditions held in Toronto, there was a three week rehearsal period during which all the et usic and directions were learned. Cost es were made at the same time and final fittings completed. And then opening night. Denise is a native of Teeswater. Her in- terest in theatre developed from the time she was, "a kid fooling around and watching a lot of TV." At 11, she started singing on Circle 8 Ranch, a CKNX program. Two other programs, Good Time Country and Marketplace, also benefitted from her .talents. "1 'love everything," she said of her musical tastes. "I think there is some really good country and western music out there, especially this show," she added. Denise attended Sacred Heart Secondary School in Wingham and became involved in the original productions developed by the school. She still takes several classes in Toronto among them singing, voice and par- ticipating in workshops. "You never stop." Three years ago Denise was in another Blyth Festival hit play, Quiet in the Land. The next year she again played in Quiet in the Land and also landed the role of Denny in Country Hearts. Last year she travelled west to Saskatoon and the 25th St. Theatre to act in The Laffin' Jack River Show, one of three plays in a busy year. The other two productions, both in Toron- to, included the venerable Oklahoma at the Limelight Dinner Theatre and And Things That Go Bump in the Night at Harbourfront. Country Hearts plays in Blyth until September 15, travels to Durham for one night, then sets up for five days in Kit- chener. Following that Denise plans to go to Europe for three or four months, "the only time I'll have for it." She has tentative plans for work in Toron- to upon her return from travelling.. She demonstrated an interest in directing and has in fact directed a high school production of Godspell. Denise was also enthusiastic about the idea of achieving the position of Artistic Director in the future, responding to the challenge inherent in the job. Janet Amos, in her last year as Artistic Director of the Blyth Festival, and Ted Johns, co-author of Country Hearts, are go- ing to take the play, to New Brunswick. There they plan to arrange a Theatre New Brunswick staging at the National Arts Cen- tre in Ottawa before touring the Maritimes next May. Clinton Public School.
