Sigma Phi Sorority

CLINTON• - Beginning Day 1984 for Beta
Sigma Phi was held at President Shirley
Mills' home on September 4. The evening
started with the opening ritual followed by a
potluck dinner.
• Awing the evening there was a baby
photo contest with everyone trying to get the
right names with the right faces.
, _A meeting was 1>eld with each committee
reporting with some new ideas for 'the '84-'85 ,
year. One of the bigger projects that both
sorority groups have been working on is+the
Fashion Show being held on September 18 at
the Goderich Township Hall. If anyone is in-
terested in tickets they are available from
any sorority member or at My Fair Lady or
by calling 482-7842.
The next meeting will be at Marilyn
McMahon's on Oct. 9 at 8 p.m.

to speak at Clinton

CLINTON -"Rev. Bob Rurnball will be the
guest speaker' at the joint Ontario
Street/Wesley-Willis United Church Women
fall thankoffering to be held on Sunday
September 16 at 7:30 p.m. in Wesley -Willis
United Church.
Since 1956; Rev. Rurnball has been the Ex-
ecutive Director of the Ontario Mission of
the Deaf, which looks after mission chur-
ches and group homes for the deaf across
Canada. In 1979,, he was responsible for
opening the Bob* Rumball Centre for the
Deaf in Toronto, which provides social,
recreational, educational and spiritual ser-
vices
for the deaf. He is also an interpreter
for the deaf in court, as well as being a
chaplain with the, Canadian Progress Club:
Prior to entering the ministry, Rev. Rum -
ball played professional football in the
C.F.L., spending four years with the Ontario
Rough Riders and one year with the Toronto
Argonauts, between 1952 and 1956.
Rev. Rumball has received many awards
for this wdrk with the deaf, including the
Lions International Humanitarian Award in
1978 and the Order of Merit by the City of
Toronto, in 1982. He was made a Member of
the Order of Canada in 1976.

on Sunday, September 16 at 7:30 p.m. in
Wesley -Willis United Church to hear Rev.
Bob Rumball.
Rev. Tom Duke and his wife Charlotte are retiring from the Presbyterian ministry. Rev.
Duke worked at St. Andrew's Church in Clinton and First Presbyterian Church in
Seaforth for six years. The Seaforth couple are retiring to Port Carling, where they will
pursue a variety of interests including, cross country skiing, gardening, macrame and

Three CRSS students win Auxiliary Ruby Haddy Memorial awards
CLINTON - The September meeting of the
Auxiliary to the Clinton Public Hospital was
held September 4.
This year there will be three recipients of
the Ruby Haddy Memorial Award, namely
Brenda Harris, Carol Straughan, and Kathy
Staddon who will receive their awards at
CHSS Commencement on September 21.
Presently, there are 27 girls actively par-
ticipating in the Candy Striper Program.
Karen Lehnen, convener 'of the Candy
Striper Committee and her assistant,
Marion Knox, have handed in their resigna-
tions, effective November 1, 1984 much to
the regret of the Auxiliary. Any person
wishing to assist in this rewarding and wor-
thwhile program, please contact Ruth Bond
at 482-3210.

Netherlands native dies
Lambert Haasjes
A Netherlands native and former Clinton
resident, Lambert Haasjes died at Huron -
view on September 6. He was 82 -years -old.
Born in Smilde, Holland on November 24,
1901, he was the son of Klaas and Marchiena
Haasjes. -
On March 14, 1940 in Westerbork; the
Netherlands, he married the former Baukje
Greydanus.'
The couple moved to Canada it ,1952,,and
resided near Clinton. Mr. Haasjes farmed
and gardened. He was a member of the Clin-
ton Christian Reformed Church.
He was predeceased by his wife who died
in 1977. He is survived by two daughters,
Mrs. Harm ( Gerry) Haverman of Papen-
drecht, Holland and Mrs. Gerald (Sandra)
Raidt of RR 1 Londesboro. Also surviving
are four sons, Gose HieYnstra of Malakwa,
B.C., Martin Haasjes of Victoria, B.C.,
George Hiemstra of Bowmanville, B.C., and
Clarence Haasjes of White Rock, B.C.
Mr. Haasjes is also survived by a sister,
Jacobje Haveman, and a brother, Jan Haas-
jes, both of Holland. Also surviving are 27
grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one daughter,
Marchiena Jacobina, two sisters and four
brothers.
?neral services were held' on Septeml**il•
10 at the Clinton Christian Reformed Church
with Rev. Berhard DeJonge officiating. In-
terment followed at the Clinton Cemetery.
Beattie Funeral Home made the 'funeral
arrangements.
Pallbearers were Dick. Kaptein, Harry
Greydanus, Raymond Raidt, Peter Raidt,
Jim Amsing and Steve Hiemstra.

Bicentennial dollars will be featured.
Almost immediately, canvassers will be
calling on the Penny Sale Supporters. Dona-
tions will be displayed at St. Paul's Parish
Hall from September 20 to the draw date
