crop, fruit ands vegetable growers near the
lake are suffering badly from one of the-,
driest summers in 40:years.

Charles S. Mac Naughton, MPP Exeter,
recently was notified by people in the Clinto-
Blyth area of the bad condition of Highway
8, from .Clinton to Blyth, and he has since
taken the matter up with the Minister of
Highways.
Following investigation by departmental •
engineers, the minister has decided to in-
clude a reconstruction program for this sec-
tion in 1961. Previously this was scheduled
for the 1962-63 period.

Huron County veterans meet at Victoria
Park where a very impressive service was'
held. The veterans met at the school
grounds and marched to the park, led by the
Clinton band.
A large crowd assembled at the Park to
enjoy the meeting. The stand was suitably

August was not much like the hot summer
month we used to consider it. The
temperature never going above 88 and only
going over 80 on seven days of the. whole 31.
Yet it dropped below 50 on 11 days or nights.

Through Keeper Mutch, the inmates of the
House of, Refuge returned their hearty
thanks to Father Hanlon, who sent a freezer
of ice-cream down to the House last week
after the picnic. It pleased the folks.
Excellent indeed was the Organ Recital
given in Wesley Church. Professor Brown
assisted by Miss Anna Martin of London,
gave the recital. There was a fair audience,
but what was lacking in numbers, was made
up by those who.were'thoroughly able to ap-
• preciate the program.
Mrs: H Bidwell, who is leaving town short-
ly, entertained the members of the Womens
Institute at her home Wednesday evening. A
very pleasant time was spent and during the
evening; the ladies presented Mrs. Bidwell
with a very handsome set of coffee spoons.
Labor Day was well spent on the bowling
green in town when the members held a
tournament for themselves. Rinks were
chosen and the games were well contested.
The trophy was won by D A Forrester who
had W Graham, W Taylor and B Gibbings on
his side. The prizes were silk umbrellas.

In Stanley Township at the council
meeting, members agreed to pay eight
cents per yard for all gravel used for public
roads. The sum of $15 was granted to repair
sidewalks in the village of Varna, .and $10
was granted for draining purposes in the
village of Bayfield. Council granted the sum
of $25 to be expended on the boundry line
between this township and the village of
Bayfield, providing the Bayfield council
grant an equal amount.
Whether it is owing to the possibility of the
government increasing the duty on flour,
and thus make a demand for millers we do
not 'know, but the fact remains, that
Goderich township has had added to its
papulation two millers. They put in their
first appearance on Saturday.
