AIN'T MISBEHAVIN', the Vats Wailer
'maim" that*creales an ra of azz and
jive, is a fine finale for the 1 Huron Poun-
try Playhouse season, This bouncy Broad-
way hit opened to a capacity crowd at the
Playhouse last Tuesday and will run until
September 15.
ATil+i'T MISBEHAVJN' is set in a Harlem'
night club around 1945 and presents hits
from that era which include "Two Sleepy
People", "Honeysuckle Rose", "I'm Gonna
Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter"
• and "The Joint Is Jumpin".
An all -black cast of five talented and)
'energetic performers--Audrei-Kaaren,
Johnie . Chase, Richardo Keens -Douglas,
Denese Matthews and Renee Rogers -
Stewart --under the direction and
choreography of Madeline Paul, turn in a
wonderful performance as they shinnny and
shake across the stage and re-create some
of North America's favorite songs of the
thirties and forties, all immortalized by the
legendary Thomas `Fats' Waller and
various others.
.The play, based on an idea by Murray
Horwitz and Richard Maltby Jr., is not an
attempt to tell Waller's life story. Instead it
portrays an era of gaudy glamour and high
spirits.
Fats Waller's music shows a true zest for
life and a complete dedication to. jazz. His
songs, such as "I've Got A Feeling I'm Fall-
ing", "Squeeze Me'.' and "Ain't
Misbehavin" and his vocal renditions of
others' music, such as "It's A Sin To Tell A ,
Lie"' by Billy Mayhew and "I Can't Give
,ou Anything But Love" by Jimmy
McHugh and Dorothy Fields, all take the au-
dience on a trip down memory lane.
AIN'T MISBEHAVIN' is fun. With tunes
like "Your Feet's Too Big" and' "Fat and
Greasy", it can't help but be. The three
women in the cast have a great time singing
and being funny at the same time on World
War II ditties like, "When The Nylons
Bloom Again" and "Cash For Your Trash".
The cast works well together as an

ensemble, particuiarl Qn the Songs "Black
and Blue ,"Spree t Rhythun. Around
and "The Joint Is J ini - Each cast
member also gets to aril: his or her own
stuff on individual numbers, enhanced by ef-
fective spotlighting from Ray Salverda.
Richard Keens -Douglas proves to be as
smooth a dancer as he is a singer, especially
on "The Viper's Drag -The Reefer Song"
Set and costume designer Lesley
Macaulay has done a superb job on AIN'T
MISBEHAVIN'.. Using basic black dresses
and tuxedoes , she has added splashes of
bright pink, blue and gold to each costume
and thrown in some wonderful hats and furs
besides. Eves► if the performers hadn't
sparkled, the clothes could have done it on
their own.
The set is simple and effective, with a.
backdrop of tall city buildings, a few tables
and chairs off to one side of the stage to por-
tray the night club atmosphere and a piano
and piano player balancing the other side.
Musical director David • Thompson
displays formidable talent in this production
as he bounces from one tune to the next. As
well as playing piano, he leads' Jack
Broumpton on drums, Ron Gilbert on
trumpet, Ron Fleming on string bass and
John Montgomery on clarinet and tenor sax.
He makes hard work look easy.
In • the final analysis, AIN'T
MISBEHAVIN' features good fun and good
music and also offers good value for your
money. Hope you get a chance to see it! .
