Tucker l'ownship will ask all
municipalities in Huron County for permis-
sion to sell lottery tickets in each
municipality to raise $35,000, to be used to
enclose the new swimming pool at
Vanastra, making it a year-round facitlity.
Anyone who says small town fairs are on
the way out should have been in attendance
at the Bayfield Old Time Fall Fair last
Saturday. The Fair Board was well reward-
ed for their efforts when nearly 2,000 people
crowded the Fair grounds to view the ex-
hibits and watch the demonstrations.
Enrolment showed increases in most
schools in the Clinton area. The elementary
school enrolment dropped to 8,015 from 8,101
of last year. At Central Huron Secondary
School, the enrolment was up to 991 from 964
last year.

After a severe wind and electrical storm
swept the area on Sunday afternoon, fire
was discovered in the barn of W.A. Haugh
and Sons, east of .Brucefield. The flames
quickly enveloped the building, and
although fire departments of Brucefield,
Seaforth and Clinton quickly responded to
the call, little could be done. Efforts were
then concentrated on saving the adjacent
buildings.
Loss was estimated at $32,000 and includ-
ed 1,000 chickens and about 300 pigs. Quan-
tities of hay and straw and a number of im-
plements were also burned.
Final campaign results of the Huron Unit
of the Canadian Cancer Society. indicate the
County's 1959 objective was exceeded by
over $2,000.
Treasurer, Mrs. Beryl A. Harper of
Goderich, announced this week's contribu-
tions totalled $15,263.75. The objective of the
Unit, which is now in its second year of
operation, was $13,000.
Tenders have been called by Central Mor-
tgage and Housing Corporation and the On-
tario Department of Planning and Develop-
ment for the construction of 12 semi-

Acres.

Luck favors some people all. right. While
plowing on the Broadfoot farm,
Tuckersmith, the other day, ,Mr. Walter
Dale noticed a bird's nest in a tree. Looking
closely at it, he thought there was something
familiar about the material with which it
was built. He took it down and unwonrid a $1
-bill from among the twigs. Of course the bill
was somewhat tattered and torn, but it
could easily hr recognized for what it was.
Labour Day was .quite in Clinton. Most
people took advantage' of the holiday by
.visiting. friends, -working in the garden,
playing tennis or golf or motoring around
the country side.
Once again the field day sports, sporisllred
by the Goderich Township Men's Club, was
a grand sudeess. The day was ideal and the
crowd ° large and orderly. The parade
started at 1 p.m., and although not as large
as last year, was a creditable one. Some
very beautifully decorated cars were on
parade and Were greatly admired.

The Clinton Flower Show opened Wednes-
day evening of this week and will continue
this evening. The hall was well filled, even
though there are not as many entries as in
other years. An orchestra comprised of J.
McRae, J. Hovey, W.G. Moffat, B. Hill and
Miss Herman, supplied the music.
The police authorities have had a busy
time. since he first of August. In the
neighborhood of 20 cases have come up for
attention. They include supplying liquor to
Indians and being drunk and disorderly.
There was a time not so long ago when the
newspapers had to record a runaway horse
every week. Not one this slimmer have we
had. Yet they say the automobiles are terri-
ble things that frighten horses.

September 3, 1884 .
Last IVIonday, sparks from a steam
thresher set fire to the farm buildings of Mr.
Jamieson of the Huron Road about four
miles east of Clinton. The buildings, with a
large amount of grain and other crops, were
burned. The quanitiy is not yet known but as
Mr. Jamieson is a good farmer, it must be
considerable. The smoke ascending from
the fire could easily be seen from Clinton.
The untried cases against Clinton hotel
keepers' for having more• than one bar on
their premises on July 12 came up before the
local magistrates on Monday. The hearing
of them has been postponed until September
0
m order to allow time to receive the deci-
sion of County Judge Toms in the conviction
appealed against.
Dave Fisher, the well known horseman of
Goderich and Colborne, has about 20 fine
stallions and mares which he will ship to the
Western States in a few days. They are
valued at over $10,000. The latest addition to
them is a seven-year-old general prupose
stallion purchaed by Mr. Fisher from the
Messrs. Norton of Westininister. The cost
was in the neighborhood of $1,000.
