Sandy Crawley, Ross Skene and Robin Craig are shown here in a scene from COUNTRY
HEARTS, the final production of the 1984 Blyth Festival season. This excellent musical -
comedy runs until September 15. (Photo by James Hockings )
Robert King, Robert Nasmith, Daisy Debolt and Robin Craig star in the Blyth Festival's
1984 season finale, Country Hearts. The rollicking musical -comedy was the box office hit of
the season in 1982. The Ted Johns -John Roby hit is playing again at the Festival until
September 15. (Photo by James Hockings)
Great music highlights Country hearts
By Shelley McPhee
BLYTH - It's rollicking, it's exuberant,
it's toe tapping entertainment.
As the season finale, the Blyth Festival
has brought back the 1982 box office hit
Country Hearts.
Co -written by Ted Johns and John Roby,
Country Hearts was a Festival favorite in
1982 and this year it returns, bigger and bet-
ter than ever.
The story line has been changed slightly,
more songs have been added and Country
Hearts remains as entertaining as ever.
The strength of this play is the great
music and lyrics, composed by John Roby.
His original compositions were combined
with a' hilarious story line developed by Ted
Johns anda hit production was made.
That was the success story of Country
Hearts in 1982, when it sold out every seat in
the theatre and it is bound to be an audience
favorite again this year.
Returning members from the 1982 produc-
tion, along with John Roby, are Patricia
Vanstone, Sandy Crawley, Robert King,
Robert Nasmith and Denise Kennedy. New
cast members are Daisy Debolt, Robin
Craig, Ron Gabriel, Ross Skene, David Fox
and Terry Harford.
The play is set in the Commodore Hotel.
The setting is a carefully re-created replica
of old familiar bar rooms. It looks like the
Blyth Inn, the Queen's Hotel, the Commer-
cial, the Hicks House.
Here the locals gather for a few drafts,
some conversation and entertainment.
The play focuses on one cold Friday night
when the regulars, the band and . storm-
stayed travellers shuffle in to escape a win-
try blast of snow. Roads are closed and snow
drifts swell up around the windows, but in-
side the Commodore the music winds up, the
beer flows freely and romances take off.
Sam Slick and the Slowpokes provide the
music while the overnight guests and staff
at the Commodore provide the, hilarious
entertainment. ' .
Country Hearts creates a ` variety of
characters who are comical, yet realistic.
There's George (Robert Nasmith) the
bartender, who's trying to raise the stan-
dards of his establishment. His main
obstacles are beer crazed Boomer (Ron
STAG and DOE

Gabriel) and barfly Zip (Ross Skene).
George hires Sam Slick and the Slowpokes
to bring in more business, but his timing, is
off. Other than the regulars, the only new
customers he. manages to attract are a
snowbound city couple - a rich man (David
Fox) and his mistress ( Patricia Vanstone).
Marg (Robin Craig), as 'bartender -
waitress manages to keep things in line at
the Commodore, raise a daughter Denise
(Denise Kennedy), and carry on a romance
with Zip.
--She hopes for a better future for her
daughter. Denise has big hopes and lots of
talent but is willing to 'give it all up to marry
Snag (Robert King). He's a likeable guy, but
not very ambitious. •
Denise finds her fame and fortune on that
snowy Friday night. She falls in love with a
singer named Rick (Sandy Crawley) and is
given a chance to perform with band
members Abbey Rose (Terry Harford) and
Nicki (John Roby).
Sam Slick (Daisy Debolt) sees Denise's
young enthusiasm and talent and recognizes
her own needs, to settle down after too many
years on the road.
Like any good old musical -comedy, Coun-
try Hearts has a happy ending.
And', like any, quality musical, LCountry
Hearts features a variety of songs, designed
to enhance the meaning of the moment.
In total 16 songs are performed in Coiultry
Hearts and the finest. ,musical highlights
come from Daisy Debolt, Denise Kennedy,
Sandy Crawley and Robin Craig. These ac-
tors display fine talents as musicians and
vocalists.
If you're a country music fan, if you like to
,laugh and enjoy a good play - you won't go

wrong with Country Hearts.
In this producation director. Janet Amos
takes her final bow with the Blyth Festival
and she does it in style. For the Blyth
Festival, Country Hearts is fitting season
finale. The production sums up the attitude
and atmosphere at the summer theatre, to
provide quality talent, laughter, music and
standing ovation entertainment.
