Gold Sp e ceremony will honor
School Car's 70th birthday
CLINTON - A gala party will honor the
70th birthday of the Clinton CN School on
Wheels No. 15089. The festivities will be held
on Saturday, September 1 at Sidman
Memorial Park and will get underway at 3
p.m.
A highlight of the afternoon will be the
Gold Spike Ceremony. This will honor the
70th birthday of the car and mark the
halfway point in its restoration.
The 'Last Spike Ceremony (or Gold Spike,
as it is called on this occasion) is the revival
of a railway custom of the 1800s. When a
railway was completed, all dignitaries of the
community, and the railway officials, plus
all the workers and people in the towns,
would gather at the railroad to see the Last
Spike being driven in place.
CN Rail is donating the Gold Spike for the
Clinton ceremony. Afterwards, the spike
will be mounted on a commemorative
plaque and presented to the CNR School on
Wheels.
Taking part in the actual spike driving
ceremony will be Cela Sloman, assisted by
Ron Young, chairman of the School on
Wheels, Clinton Mayor Chester Archibald
and CN Rail Vice President George Van de
Water.
Members of the Clinton Legion Pipe Band

Lucky dra*s and the serving of two large

The party will celebrate the unusual and
successful history of the unique railway' car.
Built in 1914 as a dining car for CN13, it
was donated to the Ontario Department of
Education in 1940. It was rebuilt . and
refurbished by CNR under the direction of
Fd'ed Sloman. One half of the car was turned
into a school room and the other half
became living quarters for th` S10;naft
family - Fred and; Cela, and their five
children, Joan, E1izleth, Mattalce>z, Bill
and Fredda. •
This car replaced the original one usedby
the Simians as the School On Wheels and
home from,September 20, 1926, when these
schools were first introduced to northern
Ontario by the provincial Ministry of
Education.
The railway car travelled • between
Capreol and Foleyet . (northwest of
Sudbury ). It stopped on sidings and brought
education to children who lived in tiny
settlements and had no way of attending
regular schools. Over 1,000 children
graduated from the Sioman's School on
Wheels.
Soggy bread
When making sandwiches with a moist
filling, spread both sides of the bread with
butter to keep the bread from becoming
soggy, says Food and Nutrition Specialist
Monica Beaumont with the Ontario Ministry
of Agriculture and Food's rural
organizations and services branch. Lettuce,
placed under and over the filling, also
prevents soggy bread,
