Major expansion for Goderich harbor GODERICH. - Agriculture Minister Ralph Ferguson announced on behalf of Transport Minister Lloyd Axworthy that new economic opportunities will open up for the transportation of salt and other com- modities with a $17 million development project at the Port of Goderich on Lake Huron. The Minister said a dredging and con- struction program will be getting underway which will enable large lake vessels as well as ocean going fry ighters to use the new facilities without Lie hindrance of present draft restrictions. "Providing the Port of Goderich with the same depth as the St. Lawrence Seaway will certainly encourage future regional in- dustrial development," said Mr. Ferguson. Work involves reconstructing the existing wharf, construction of a breakwater and a new wharf, as well as dredging to provide seaway depth at both wharves. The minister said that while contracts have not yet been awarded, the bidding pro- cess should begin in about a month. Con- struction and dredging will be done in phases between now and 1986-87. Goderich is the largest community on the east shore of Lake Huron and its main ac - VOTE. The weekend help means that local doctors can, have a day off.. CPH has been using the relief system for four years. Without it, Clinton doctors would be working seven days a week, betv4een their regular practices and weekend schedules. CPH:has successfully managed to keep up with the increasing demands on the e ergency department. Y a few sh rt yea o ` : rs o, when the emergency department consisted of two small examination rooms and an operating - room, Mrs. Doig. recalled; "For the number of patients that went through there it - functioned very well. Now that we're in the new wing, I don't know how we did it–We Used to have to treat patients in.the hall. That was unsettling." The new emergency wing is made -up of two examination rooms, a recovery room, trauma room and fracture room. Mrs. Doig noted, "The newlemergenoy is working very well for a smart Ospital. It's well equipped and even the doctors from London are amazed." Mrs. Doig believes that the increased demands on the emergency services comes through the public's image of the health care system. She explained that the health care system has made access easy for the public. "Perhaps too much so," she said, "but then what profession isn't abused. I wouldn't be surprised to see user fees." CPH's emergency head nurse says that the emergency -outpatient wing is a vital component of the hospital. However, unlike the images that televison shows portray, not all emergency cases have tgbe battered and bloodied car crash victims. She explained, "For the mother who's had her child vomiting for the last 24 hours, that's an emergency." The CPH emergency wing offers the necessary services and strives to provide personal contact. Here, the nurses' work ranges from assisting doctors in the trauma room, to comforting a small child. Quality care is the aim of the emergency wing and Mrs. Doig noted; "Everyone in Clinton should be . proud of the new emergency systerrh."
