OrigibalilY, rn three different forms, is
rife with this week's albums by Joe Jaeksen,
Berlin, and the Thompson Twins.
There are two, meanings for originality.
The first, which is one Of Joe Jackson's
skills, is the power of originating; inven-
tivene,ss. The second definition is the quality
of being original (which describes Berlin) or
novel (what better word to employ when
discussing -the Thompson Twins).
In the past five years North America has
had a great influx of Britain's Joe Jackson
(who now resides in New York). We've
• heard hits like Steppin' Out, Is She Really
Going Out With Him, and I'm a Man. Now,
with Soul
the rraleparsoed of his sixth y
th album,eaiBody
andwork),
Jackson returns to the charts.
Body and Soul brings back the days when
the Mafia ran amuck. It contains a big blues
sound that will appeal to older audiences.
Jackson has a definite ability to sing, not to
mention his lyrics. These poems are the ex-
pression of human emotions from the fear of
a final outcome. (The Verdict) to romantic
longing (Happy Ending) to philosophical
criticism (You Can't Get What You Want).
Unlike many artists today, Jackson has a
distinctly dramatic sound. In fact, he is oc-
casionally dramatic to a straining point. In
The Verdict, Jackson's voice, with the
words not properly enunciated, seems in-
substantial while the music drags.
However, as the blurb printed on the
album's back cover states, Jackson spent
much time in his Masonic Lodge/recording
studio to get exactly the sound he wanted.
Indeed, the undesirable effect of The Ver-
dict could be continued. Anyway, for a non -
jazz -oriented person like mVself, to find
Body and Soul the least bit pleasurable is a
credit to it.

Original in a comparative way is Berlin.
This band, which sounds like. Kate Bush
singing for the Motels, has affrontive lyrics
that, fortunately for their sales, are not as -
blatant as Rough Trade's.

AmericanAmerican bands, Berlin has a European
flair in that Terri Nunn's vocals remind one
of a pouting ,French actress. Their most
popular single to date is No More Words. If
you know the song, you know the album.
All the songs on Love Life are hauntingly
familiar to each other - the beat is the same
the melody is the same, the lyrics are all
about love. To make things worse, Nunn
buries her lyrics with predatory "who" in
Pictures of You that render the words in-
discriminate. Of course, the songs having a
dance beat, they are radio material despite

Also the kitchen clean-up has been
scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday,

days. Several of the executive have already
volunteered to work but we need more peo-

Daisy Debolt sings Country Hearts
Daisy DeBolt, formerly of the well-known
folk duo Fraser and DeBolt, will appear in
COUNTRY HEARTS, opening' at the Blyth
Festival August 21 and playing through to
September 15.
Daisy's varied musical career includes
everything from touring to choreography,
film scores to recording, and live 'perfor-
mances that are electrifying. She has just
completed a tour with the Theatre du
Nouvel-Ontario production of "Nickel".
Daisy's concert performances include ap-
pearances at Convocation Hall; with Sylvia
Tyson at Harbourfront; at the Northern
Lights (Sudbury), Manitoulin Island, and
Winnipeg Folk Festivals; and Scuffers and
the Rivoli Theatre in Toronto. She has also
, appeared on such CBC programs as Touch
the Earth, Morningside, Laurier Lapierre,
Variety Tonight and Mr. Dressup.
Writing of her in Miss Chatelaine, Paul
Goddard said: "Every 'So often she emerges
to give a concert with songs that meld

Daisy joined the rest rthe cast (Robert
King, Ross Skene, John Roby, Patricia
Vanstone, Anne Anglin, Terry Harford,
David Fox, Sandy Crawley, Denise Ken-
nedy, Robert Nasmith, and Ron Gabriel) for
rehearsals Monday, July 30. She will play
"Sam", lead singer of Sam Slick and the
Slowpokes - a'country and western band.
COUNTRY HEARTS was first performed
at the Blyth Festival in 1982 and was a box
office smash. The 1984 version has terrific
new songs written by John Roby in addition
to the favourites from 1982.
Theatre New Brunswick in Fredericton
will be producing COUNTRY HEARTS in
1985 and that production will then tour to the
National Arts Centre in Ottawa.

Overall, the music is precise with the ar-

could this British group not be unique when
listed among their instruments are marim-

title song in itself makes the album well
worth the price - it has an Egyptian flavor
and an all-encompassing beat.
The only crticism this album deserves is
that th Vocals are often unclear. But this is
due t uction, which unlike Side Kicks,
has the wor of Alex Sadkin and Tom Bailey

which has a much clearer production in

When compared to TT's previous effort,
Into the Gap is surprisingly not as punchy,
which does not mean it's not as good.
