Report on Sports
By Rod Hilts
Way to go Ratz!
Congratulations to all the sports groups
that took part in Clinton's Sports Day last
weekend.
Activities ranging from baseball to swim-
ming and soccer had Clintonians in the par-
ticipation spirit. Participants ranged. from
the Mite boys to parents, who played the
Squirt Girls.
The highlight of the weekend was the Clin-
ton H2O Ratz third consecutive swim meet
victory. Clinton swam to victory over teams
from Vanastra, Goderich, St. Marys and
Exeter. These Clinton swimmers deserve
praise for their efforts! Good work you slip-
pery Ratz! .
The Ratz also conducted a successful' hot
dog and pop sale at the meet.' Over $100 was
generated. The money will be go toward the
purchase of team shirts and will help fund
their trip to Kincardine's Sportsfest, which
will be held later this month:
Over at the men's ball hockey tournament
in the arena, the action was as hot inside as
the blistering temperatures outside.
The Seaforth Boars captured the Tourna-
ment and the Seaforth Nationals were
runners-up. The Consolation crown went to
Exeter. The Clinton Rebels were runners-up
in the Consolation round.
The tournament's Most Valuable Player
award went to Exeter's Ron Funston. Ex-
eter also won the best goalie award. The
High Scorer was Seaforth National's for-
ward Bob Dale.
At Flemings -Field and the Community
Park, an Atom Soccer Tournament was in
full swing. Clinton put up a good fight but
bowed out of the championship round with a
3-2 loss to Goderich. Goderich went on the
finals but lost out 2-0 to a tough Kincardine
team.
On Saturday, the Clinton Colts baseball
team held a chicken barbecue under the
grandstand with proceeds going toward
minor ball. Colts' Manager John Leppington
estimated that 200 meals were sold. At $5 a
plate, even after expenses have been paid,
minor ball should prosper. Congratulations
go out to Bill Fleming and crew for the tasty
meal they cooked up!
Congratulations Clinton on a fine Sports
Day. Let's hope it continues to grow every
year. We've built a good foundation.

MacDonald and John Hart had two each.

their fourth straight game from Clinton, this
time by a 3-0 count.
Clinton hurler Andy Flowers only allowed
four hits in seven innings. Three hits came
in the fourth inning with the score tied 0-0.
The big blow was a Colts' error, the only
one of the game, which allowed two,
unearned runs to score.
Hans Leppington led the Colts with, a
double and two singles in three trips to the
plate.
Colts over Exeter
Clinton won by default over host Exeter
Juniors on Sunday, as the Juniors fielded
only five players.

and his crew for cooking all the food at the
chicken barbecue on Saturday. All proceeds
from the event will go to minor ball.

Mites win ne of three
errors prove costly
In three games last week the Tri County
Clinton Mites scored 64 runs but it was only
enough to win one game.
Last Wednesday night the Mites hosted
Wingham and took themselves out of the
game early with many errors and several
walks to give Wingham a big lead they
never gave up.
Wingham held an 11-1 lead after three inn-
ings as the locals committed seven errors.
The boys played better in the last four inn-
ings but couldn't muster enough offense as
Wingham went home with a 16-10 victory.
Collecting hits for,„Clinton were Danny
Wildfong who went three for three including
a triple, while singles went to David
Nahrgang and Mery Gass.
On Thursday night Walton carne to town
and the locals proved that if the opposition
doesn't have a fast hurler they can hit the
ball as they hammered the visitors 33-14.
Finally, the boys -found another team that
is not too strong in the tching department
as they unloaded fo' 0_ s, and 24 walks.
Leading the hit pa ade with two each were
David Nahrgang, Danny Wildfong, Mery
Gass and Bryan Watson while singles went
to Ben Lohh and Jared Rnrlahon

On Sports Day held last Saturday
Belgrave provided the opposition for the
Mites in a real see -saw affair which wasn't
decided until the seventh inning.
After trailing 6-4, and 17-14 and losing
leads of 9-7, and 14-11, the Mites managed to
tie the score at 21 after six innings.
In the seventh, however, it was Belgrave
who got the runs while the locals came up
empty as the visitors took a 23-21 victory.
Danny Wildfong led the home team with
four hits, including a home run. Mark
Falconer, Nathan Burns, Scott Wright and
Bryan Watson, also with a home run, added
two hits apiece while singles went to Mike
Nahrgang, Kenny Colquhoun and Ben Lobb.
This week's action will see the Mites
travel to Walton on Tuesday night and
return home on Wednesday to host the
strong Winthrop team. Game time is 7 p.m.
at the Public School.
The Mites would like to thank Bill and
Marg Fleming and crew and the Clinton
Colts who sponsored a fund-raising
barbecue on Sat. of which minor ball will be
the recipient of any profits. Thanks for a job
well done.
