Try these tips
Let the sun shine in
avoid painful burn
Too much sun can take the shine out of
your summer.
So find your place in the sun by discover-
ing how to care for your skin and enjoy sum-
mer, all at the same time.
Taken in sensible doses, sunshine forms
Vitamin D in your body, clears up an oily
skin and dries pimples. It's only when sun-
shine turns to sunburn that it's harmful.
Who wants that blistering, painful burn
when a slow, sun -kissed tan is safer and
more flattering? Here's how to get a healthy
glow.
Do take two friends with you to all out-
door, daytime events: a wide -brimmed sun
hat and a sun lotion or sun screen suited to
your skin.
A sun block lets no harmful rays through,
a sun screens the rays so only some get
through, and a sun lotion (or bronzer)
moisturizes your skin while letting almost
all the rays through. If your skin is extreme-
ly light and/or sensitive, then be sensible —
and go slow.
Don't think one application is enough.
Sweating and swimming both remove sun-
tan oil, so reapply frequently. Be generous
with yourself.
Do keep your hat on when you're in the
sun. Sunbeams and salt -water are harsh on
natural hair — and unmerciful to' dyed or
bleached hair.
Also, no head of hair is thick enough to
protect you adequately from glaring,
overhead rays. A light straw hat can pre-
vent sunstroke as well as squinting and
Frowning ( which encourage "character"
lines).
Iion't forget that the areas highest off the
ground get a greater dosage — from direct
and reflected rays. (The sun reflects off the
sand and water.)
Apply extra sun screen on your nose and
fihoulders (if you're sitting up) or your
ftlghs and knees (if you're lying down).
Exercise double precaution with sensitive
areas that haven't seen sunlight. (or much of
it) such as your armpits, backs of knees,
and parts that a new two -piece -suit or bikini.
is exposing for the first time.
Do take two aspirinsif you're light -eyed
and fair-complected.
Aspirin dilates the blood, vessels in your
skin; dilation also occurs when your body
naturally wants to give off heat. After you
swallow two aspirins, your body gives off
more heat than it normally would, thereby
reducing heat absorption and sunburn.
Don't be afraid to loosen up. When your
suit's shoulder straps or hip buckles or tight
elastic spots dig into your skin, 'this con-
stricts the blood vessels. Dilation (or free
blood flow) prevents burning; constriction
increases the burn.
Remember that a slightly loose bathing
suit actually prevents a certain amount of
sunburn.
Do say, "I've had enough!" when you
have. Your friends are remaining on the
beach? Let them. Everyone has her limit.
Don't be afraid to set yours.
The shade -seekers always outlast the sun -
lovers in the long -run.
• Whether you're an outdoor person or not,
summertime still makes demands on your
skin. Meet the demand with an extra supply
of skincare secrets.
Use spring or mineral water in your
icecube tray. Anytime you finish washing
your face, wrap a cube in a tissue, then glide
the Ice all over your face. It tightens the
pores and staves off "the greasies".
purse. They're indispensable when you need
a disposable "wash cloth".
Sun and saltwater wash away protein.
Replenish it by pouring a pint of fresh whole
milk (don't skimp and use skim milk) or one
cup of instant powdered milk crystals into a
warm tub and swirl it around. This bath will
leave your skin satiny smooth with no trace
_of stickiness.
Keep summer sweat from aggravating oi-
ly skin with this remedy:
Beat two egg whites until stiff and blend in
a teaspoonof baking soda. Wash and dry
you face thoroughly, then apply castor
to therntire eye area. '
Avoiding the eyes, gently apply egg mask
to face and neck. Rest at the beauty angle
(feet higher than the head) for 10 to 15.
minutes. Remove mask with lukewarm
water and finish off with a brisk icecube
During the summer, keep a bottle of witch
hazel refrigerated. To touch up an oily spot
or two, soak a cotton pad in -chilled witch
hazel and dab away.
You can •even moisten some pads, wrap
them in a plastic bag and tuck them in your

soap up, rinse as usual first. Then let your
milk -bath run and, this time, don't use soap
at all — so the milk's protein can really ;
penetrate your skin.
When your skin is red and blistered, -
refresh yourself at home by applying cool,
wet cloths to the hot spots; if your skin isn't
broken or peeling, add one tablespoon of
alcohol per pint of water. Repeat these cool-
ing compresses for 15 minutes, then towel
dry gently.
Summertime fun doesn't have to end with
sunburn or sun damage. Keeping a. sensible,
clear, cool head counts a• lot. So don't
sacrifice your common sense just for the
sake of getting a tan.
