in the new boards. Improved materials used
on the sails and in the boards have allowed
for greater maneuverability and increased.
life.
"Now the sails can be tuned more than
ever before. The user can get more out of
their equipment in a variety of conditions,"
Mark said.
The addition of battens, small tighening
devirses on the sail planes, promotes better
shape and increases the life of the sail. Tear
and water resistant materials also increases
performance and durability.
"Sails should last between two and three
years, depending on the user's keenness,"
Mark said.
Beginners are encouraged to purchase
one sail and should learn how to sailboard in
low wind conditions. Mark recommends that
beginners purchase a sail -sized sail between
5.8 square metres to 6.3 metres.
Once the sailor has gained experience m
various wind conditions, they will likely
purchase three sails. Generally, 5.5 metre
sails are used in wind speeds -ranging from
23 - 32 knots; 6.3 metres for wind speeds
between, 15 and 23 knots and 7 metre sails for
15 knots and under.
"The more equipment you have, the more
you'll get out of it," Mark explained.
The style of board used depends on much
the sameprinciples considered when buying
a sail. Personale preference, experience,
weather conditions and riding style of the
user determines what type of board will be
used. They vary in length, although the
majority of sails are 12 feet long.
Many companies sell the sail and board as
one package; however, there are some
companies which manufacture only sails.
Children's beards are also available at
Sailboards Bayfield. The sails on children's
boards are 2.5 metres square and the
sailboards are available for children under
100 lbs.
"If children are getting into it, it must be
alright," Mark said, in explaining the sports
new found respect.
Boardsailors should be reminded that it is
the law to wear a personal floatation devise
while out on their crafts. In fact,
boardsailors will find that specialized
floatation devises for sailboards will make
sailing more enjoyable." The devises have a
hook on them, which attaches to the boom
grip on the sail. This allows the user to
relieve pressure on the forearm and makes
for more enjoyable and longer sailing time.
The sport is cheaper than one might
guess. Saillibard prices start • at
approximately $525 and range to $1,600 and
$1,700.
"It's inexpensive for someone who wants
to have fun on the water. It gives me
tremendous pleasure sailing by a $200;000
yacht on my sailboard," Mark said with a
grin.
Portability is a luxury of the sport.
Buddy system means fun and safety
When you're out of doors, it's not only
more fun to have someone with you, it's the
safe thing to do. A buddy system works
whether you're out for a long walk where
people are scarce or splashing around at a
crowded beach or pool. It means someone
knows where you are, and can help if you
need it. It's a good way to encourage kids to
be safety conscious and to take responsibili-
ty.
Panic is less likely to be a problem when
two people are together than it is for so-
meone alone and in trouble. Besides un-
balancing your ability to think, panic can
add to physical problems by making you
sweat. That reduces body heat and adds to
the possibility of dehydration. A buddy can
also use his St. John Ambulance First Aid
training if it's needed.
Even very young children can be en-
couraged to keep an eye on one another, but
obviously there must be a responsible adult.
watch , over them in any potentially
dangerous situation.
And the network of family and friends at
the cottage should be used to keep everyone
safe.

minute and it could prevent real trouble.
One minor but painful affliction that a
buddy can straighten out, is a cramp. It can
be brought on by cold water or exercise gone
wrong. If it catches you in some situations,
for instance you are swimming in deep
water, it can be serious.
First Aid for cramp is to stretch the con-
tracted muscles. If the cramp is in the hand,
straighten out the fingers forcibly but gent-
ly. If it's inthe thigh, straighten the knee
and raise the leg with one hand under the
heel, and the other pressing down on the
knee. If the cramp is the calf, straighten
the knee and draw the foot up toward the
shin. If it is in the foot, straighten the toes
and have the victim stand on the ball of the
foot.
Get a group of neighbors together, and
take a St. John Ambulance First Aid course
at the cottage. For information, call St. John
locally or the provincial office in Toronto at

Boardsailors can use car roof racks to
transport their crafts. Sails can be rolled up
and placed in a protective bag. Most
sailboards take 10 minutes to assemble.
The proprietors of Sailboards Bayfield say
their main market ,is experienced sailors
that want to upgrade their equipment. The
trio emphasized that they did not want to
eliminate beginners from their customer
list.
Customers have ranged significantly in
age - from 14 to 65 -years -old. You're never
too old or too young to have fun.
"Like anything new, it takes time for the
general population to figure it out. They're
going pretty strong now. In the past there's
been four or five boardsailors on the beach.
Now there's 15 or 20 of them," Mark said.
Why not give this exciting new sport a try.
