Event honors community
Bayfield fall fait
shows summer's best
The old fashioned fall fair signals the end
of summer in Bayfield. The local
agricultural society will stage its 128th Old
Tyme Fan Fair on August 24 this year.
An annual favorite, the fair shows off the
best vegetables and flowers grown in local
• gardens. The fall also beasts a sp/ending
needlework, art and crafts competition.
It's also an event that shows the area's
best heavy horses, cattle, roosters and
rabbits.
Young 4-11 competitors show their ponies
and horses and hold a poultry show that last
year drew close to 300 entries.
A highlight of the Bayfield Fall Fair is the
afternoon parade. Last year saw the largest
parade in the fair's history. The Clinton
Legion Pipe Band, antique cars, horse and
pony drawn 'wagons, the Ruiners, 11 floats
of every description and -zanily dressed
pedestrians took part.
The fair also features local musical
talents, games, the Lions Club midway and
a variety of homemade taste treats.
For Bayfielders, the annual fall fair -is a
way to honor their community, the talented
people that live there and a way to celebrate
another fine summer in the lakeside village.

Cushion of water can -
be as hard as concrete
If you fall off water. skis or out of a moving
boat, when you hit the water the .wrong way,
Lake Huron may suddenly present a surface
that seems as hard as concrete, rather than
the inviting, friendly cushion of water you're
used to. The injuries that result are often the
same as in any high impact fall, fractures.
and concussion.
Perhaps the worst thing about that kind of
accident is that it happens because people
are having fun, but they're inexperienced or
they're showing off. Some of the most tragic
injuries, the ones that leave people'
paralyzed and in wheel chairs, happen
. around boats and water in a moment's high
spirited burst of carelessness.
When someone is injured in the water, you
can make matters much worse if you panic
or do the wrong thing. It's a time to go
, carefully and cautiously. Don't, do more
damage with the boat -or motor, slow right
dowh and stop. Don't risk lives
unnecessarily, use life saving equipment.
If you think the injured person has neck or
spinal injuries, you must remember to move
him as little as possible and provide support
for the neck and back. Provide first aid
treatment if necessary for breathing and

Wear your life jacket and carry a life

large gauze pressure dressings, two smaller
surgical pads, waterproof adhesive tape, a
package of adhesive bandages, two
triangular bandages, antiseptic soap, a
sharp needle, scissors and sunburn
ointment.
If you have a large boat that you sleep on,
you should have more of each plus a hot
water bottle, ice pack and St. John
'Ambulance first aid book. Stow it where it's
reachable and clean and won't become a
projectile if you stop suddenly.
