( Rod Hilts photo) Chautauqua tradition revived in Bayfield By Helen Owen Pioneer Park again played an important part in Bayfield's Bicentennial celebrations on Sunday afternoon when the Tapestry Singers presented their Dominion. Chautau- qua Show to • a large and appreciative au- dience. Under the direction of Wayne Strongman, the musical director the company opened their show with Fanfare Which was special- ly commissioned and composed by Harry Freedman, followed by Dominion Chautau- qua by Andrew MacBean. Adding variety to the performance were an Ode to a Mammoth Cheese, traditional Ontarian songs, a nostalgic look at the old', schools, politics, the wars, sports and opera. Together and individually the performers brought to every song and piece their in- dividual personalities in presenting patriotism, Ontario's heritage, satire, the arts and memories of wars. The, second half of the program followed in the traditions of the original Chautauqua shows and reflected the hardships of the pioneers, the development of the railroad, an hilarious presentation of the Prohibi- tionist's song, and in a more contemporary LONDESBORO LIONS CLUB Smoked Pork Chop Barbecue in conjunction with Hullett Days on July 14 at Londesboro Hall 5- 7 p.m. Adults $5.50 Children $3.50 9tee 9aelez4•, INTRODUCING ORIFLAME High quality and economically priced European skin care and makeup products. Against an ingeniously constructed set representing the, tent used in the original shows, the performers switched from one mood to the next, and the children who had attended the Music Camp on the previous day took their part in the performance with tremendous enthusiasm, carefully following the lead of the professionals, singing and miming. Their participation in all three songs , was delightful giving the show a closeness with the audience. Charming people on and off stage, the Tapestry Singers themselves enjoyed this visit to Bayfield, their second and expressed the hope that they will be asked to return. It was interesting to learn at the end of the show from a member of the audience that Leon Major author of the Chautauqua >;teview was the son of parents who once had a business in Goderich where he attended school. From there to University he has now established himself notably in the theatrical world.
