Sportsfest is furt for evpryorle
Thanks to the supportive efforts by the
Clinton Recreation Committee and local
sporting groups, things are really being to
take form for Clinton's participation in
Kincardine's Sportsfest '84.
The Sportsfest is a Sports Festival
Weekend that is designed for fun,
fellowship, participation and friendly
competition in recreation sports. This year,
the Lake Huron Zone Recreationists
Association (LHZRA) will be hosting its 8th
annual Sportsfest..
"Enjoying yourself and playing the game
for the sake of playing are the main
objectives. Sportsfest is for recreation and
house league players, not for All Star
teams," Host Director Keith Davidson said.
Sportsfest began in Kincardine in 1976 and
attracted between 1,200 and 1,500
participants. Since then, the event has
escalated in popularity and last year in
Seaforth, Sportsfest attracted between 2,500
and 3,000 participants.
This year Sportsfest is introducing several
new events. Kincardine Recreation Director
Davidson said the new events are all being
developed in Kincardine. He said he hopes
that entries in the new events will spur
friendly competition (between Kincardine
and surrounding towns when Sportsfest is
ov er.
The new events include: Girls''
gymnastics, boys' ball hockey, youth judo,
girls soccer, ladies' soccer, outdoor
badminton, men's over 30's soccer, sailing,
co-ed two pitch ball, archery, long distance
swim, lawn darts, canoe races, board
sailing, rugger, men's flag football, cycling,
karate, and events for the mentally
handicapped and buddies.
In total, 36 events will occupy the time of
Sportsfest '84 participants. Baseball will be
one of the larger events at the Sportsfest.
Interest high
In Clinton interest in the Sportsfest is
growing. On Monday, June 25 at 7 p.m. a
information meeting concerning Sportsfest
'84 will be held.. Event registration forms
and detalia will be distributed at the
meeting.
The Clinton Recreation Committee Is
doing its part in promoting participation in
this year's Sportfest. Between $100 and $200
has been allocated by the Committee for
Sportsfest. Most of the money is expected to
be used to offset registration fees by some of
the groups.
Clintonians Kent Colquhoun and Colleen
DeJong will play an key role in organizing
Sportsfest '84 from recreation headquarters
in Clinton.
The two will work with Mr. Duguay in
promoting recreational activities in Clinton.
The Ministry of Tourism and Recreation,
through the Experience '84 program, will be
funding 75 per cent of their salaries. the
Recreation Committee will pay the
remaining 25 per cent.
Kent and Colleen will also be involved in
the organization of Clinton's Fun Olympics,
the inter -county swim meet and any other
special events sponsored by.the Recreation
Committee.
Mr. Duguay said that even though an
official organizational- meeting for
Sportsfest hasn't been held, in town, the
response has been excellent. Lawn Bowling,
euchre, men's ball hockey, minor baseball
and minor soccer groups have already
expressed an interest to participate. Mr.
Duguay . said that there is 'a possibility of
suffleboard, darts and men's and women's
softball teams entering the Sportsfest. It is
surprising what a little bit or organization
can do!
Everyone is urged to attend Sportsfest '84.
On August 17, 18 and 19 the fun begins. No
one will go home a loser. All participants
will receive Sportsfest buttons and crests.
Entry deadlines is on July 20. Entries are
taken on - "first come, first served" basis.
See you at the Sportsfest!

CMA chief referee, Bob St. Goddard of

committee hires Food
Concession Manager
revamping of the Clinton Public School ball
diamond.
Earlier in the spring, the committee
allocated $200 toward a screen and general
maintenance of the diamond. An additional
$500 was donated at their June 14 meeting
for the purchase and application of stone
dust. The committee is looking after $700 of
the $1,200 revamping cost and Clinton Minor
Ball will make up the difference.
The ball diamond, located on the
southwest corner of the public school
playground is being fixed up so that Clinton
minor ball and ladies teams can use the
diamond.
"Demand is exceeding supply and we,had
to, look at maintaining it as a third ball
diamond in town," Mr. Duguay explained.
Mr. Duguay said that he will try to
recover the cost of renovating the diamond
where applicable. He said in the future he
may ask for user donations.
Mr. Duguay said that a user schedule will
have to be devised for the diamond. Any
groups interested in using the diamond,
primarily for adult softball and minor ball
should contact the Recreation Director. No
user fee willbe asked for the bookings.

CLINTON - The Recreation Committee
heye decided to hire a Food Concessions
Manager following a decision to operate the'
concessions below the grandstand in
addition to the arena concessions.
According to Recreation Director Kevin
Duguay,. the committee announced the
appointment of Pat Saundercock of Clinton
as the Concessions Manager.
"Pat's bringing with her a wealth of
experience in the concession's business,"
Mr. Duguay said.
Mr. Duguay said she has six year's
experience working at the Drive -In Theatre
and she has helped the Recreation'
Committee for several years.
Mrs. Saundercock will be responsible for
overseeing the operation and staffing of the
two concession booths.
In the past, the Recreation Committee
was only responsible for the arena
concession, while the Clinton Raceway
looked after the grandstand concession. Mr.
Duguay said that negotiations with the
Raceway Committee resulted in the
Recreation Committee taking over the
responsibility of the grandstand concession.
The grandstand concession, will be open to
support Community Park activities. A crew
of 11 people were hired to work at both
concessions throughout the summer. Some
of the staff will be hired to. work in the winter
as. well.
Mr. Duguay said the committee is looking
at increasing their revenue margin by a •
minimum of 10 per cent through the
operation of the grandstand booth.
Money allocated
The Recreation Committee is allocating
between $100 and $200 to help some local
groups register for Kincardine's Sportsfest.
Mr. Duguay said the committee will be
budgeting money to trip the group's offset
registration. costs.
Roller Skating losing popularity
The committee discussed devising
promotional schemes in an attempt to
increase the number of people attending the
town's roller skating sessions - which has
dwindled by an estimated 20. per cent from
last year's figures.
Mr. Duguay proposed a "give-away
night" at the rollerskating sessions. For the
admission price, each participant is eligible
to win door prizes consisting of tapes,
records and other items, donated by local
merchants.
Mr. Duguay said a lot of interest has been
expressed by local merchants on the plan.
Mr. Duguay added that they will endeavor
to keep up with popular music and keep the
environment safe at the roller skating
sessions.

proposed club house at the Recreation
Committee's June 14 meeting.
Ken Flett, Walter Newcombe and Milford
Durst explained the club's proposal and
asked for the committee's support on the
project. .
The proposal includes tearing down the
old club house and building a new one.
Mr. Duguay explained that the club has to
have an agreement 'with the municipality .
before funding for ' the project can be
obtained through federal and provincial
grants., 1, ,,,.,
Mr. ' Duguay said that the committee.
seemed to be in favor of overall concept of
the proposal and were, "fairly
• enthusiastic".
