Elections take place at CPU's annual
meeting, which will be held on Tuesday,
June 19 at 8 p.m.
What's a board member?
Board members come from all walks of
life and their input comes from all parts of
society.
Mr. Steyr describes them as, "people in
this community who know this job has to be
done and consider it their contribution to
society."
He added, "We're here for the community
as a whole, not certain individual sections."
People who sit on the board find that they
can put their areas of interest and expertise
to work for the hospital. ,
Dawna Westlake of Bayfield uses her 12
year experience in the banking field to head
the hospital finance committee:
Committee 'members include former
Bank of Montreal manager Earl Hilderley
and Clinton lawyer Beecher Menzies. The
committee works with CPR's director of
finance Reta Kelland and Mr. Steyn,
preparing monthly financial statements,
considering capital equipment purchases
and annual budget pre oration. .
Mrs. Wesllake"ll'arv'ad'"dll the board for
threeyears:`"°ShZI also —sits on the
-management, joint conferetrce,
accreditation, and long term planning
committees. She noted, "I'm interested in.
the hospital and working to provide:the best
patient care with the money we have
available."
board's longest serving Members are' Bob
Campbell and William Counter, both of
Clinton. Mr. Campbell sits on the
management andjoint conference
committees and Mr. Counter heads the.
property. committee.
After working with the board for more
than two decades, Mr. Counter said that he
will step down when his term of office is up.
He explained, "Continuity is good, but new
faces help to make a blending of the best
ideas."
Another longtime member is Hugh Flynn,
a Hullett Township. farmer. A board
member for 18 years. Mr. Flynn is a
member of the property committee.
One of the youngest and newest members
of the board is Barb Howson of Blyth. She
became involved in hospital work when the
fund raising drive for the emergency -out
patient wing was in full force. A board
member for one year, Mrs. Howson sits on
the public relations committee.
Public relations falls under the expertise
of Faye Fear of Clinton. She also sits on the
long term planning and accreditation
committees.
Her ability to report on meetings is also
shown through her work as secretary for the
Clinton BIA, the town planning advisory
committee and industrial committee.
As president of the Clinton Hospital
Auxiliary., Esther Wright of Bayfield, also
has experience in public relations. Another
Auxiliary member, Marny Walden of
Bayfield, has been a hospital board member
for five years. Her board work focuses on
public relations, accreditation and long
term planning.
Drs. Steed and Newland use their medical
expertise in board decisions. Dr. Steed
headed the successful hospital accreditation
survey and also chairs the long term
planning committee. He's also a member of
the property committee and is involved in
the medical centre proposal.
The chief of medical staff, Dr. Newland,
sits on the joint conference committee which
acts as a liasion group between the board
and the medical staff and is also a member
of the management committee.
Clinton businessmen Bill Hearn is vice-
hairman of the board. He is a member of
1 (e management and property committees.
He admits that at times he finds it difficult
t juggle his work at Epps Manufacturing
add hospital board commitments. He noted,
'If you wanted to you could work on hospital
matters fulltime."
A board member for the past six years, his
interest in CPH was sparked after the
hospital was threatened with closure. He
explained, "I was interested in helping the
hospital operate as a viable facility. The
threat of closure brings.tlhe hospitgl, closer to
you. "
Pride and the desire to provide quality
health care are two of the main factors that
draw people to serve on the Hospital boned.
Board. Chairman Leen Rehorst has served
CPH for the past 19 years. He initially began
as representative for Tuckersmith
Township and admits, "I never thought I'd'
like it.
Today the retired farmer; can devote More
time to hose ita l..work and has erved as the
board chairman AV the ,past four pars. As
bead of the board he chairs themanagement
and joint conference committees and is a
standing member of the five other
committees.
"Staying on top of things is the key, I want
to be involved," he explained.
He does this be holding individual
committee meetings as well as the monthly
board meeting. Monday morning chats with
Mr. Steyn also help keep him informed.
"I want to know exactly where I stand and.
what we want to talk about at the board
meetings," Mr. Rehorst explained.
Involvement
The board chairman believes in
involvement by all board members and open
discussions, "Sure we have different
opinions sometimes, but I like that. We have
a great bunch and we respect each other."
Mr. Rehorst's position is up for re-election
this year and he hopes to stay on as
chairman.
"I immigrated to Canada in 1950 and
came to Clinton in 1952. Clinton's been good
to my family. This way I can give something
back to the community," he said.
The hospital board works with an annual
budget of more than SO'rmillion and Mr.
Stern noted, "The board Of trtess the
hospital today are • finding- their true
responsibility, It's,. no longer, a small
operation, The board here is very
responsive to good ideas and they've spend
their money wisely. They haven't bought
equipment that would be used just toput the
Clinton hospital on the map."
Mr. Steyn added, "The board members
come without reluctance and the attendance
at the meetings is great. They are to be
• commended for doing this on a volunteer
basis with no remuneration."
Annual meeting
The election of board members, budget
and committee reports will be discussed at
the hospital annual meeting, to be held
Tuesday, June 19 at the hospital board
room, starting at 8 p.m.
Members of the general public are
encouraged to attend. Mr. Steyn pointed out
that the hospital is operated and funded by
the people of Clinton and surrounding area
and their support and interest is essential.
Chairman Rehorst also "hopes for a good
public turnout at the annual meeting. He.
noted, • "I hope the public doesn't think we
