tal damage. raat Work by the Maitland
Valley conservation Authority on small gut-
lysentrol and.iaitashore management has
shown how costly erosion control can be. It
is not uncommonto spend thousands of
dollars on design work and construction on-
ly to find that pad of the problem is caused
by erosion forces off site.
This new found knowledge leads to the
next major problem; how to get the co-
operation of neighbors in studying or fixing
common erosion problems. Some are
unaware of the magnitude of the erosion
threat while others simply cannot afford the
high costs of hiring an engineer and con-
structing major control structures.
The Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority is attempting to deal with some of
these concerns in a coastal engineering
study being completed this Summer. The
purpose of the study is to catalog each
stretch of the shoreline for existing erosion. •
The , coastal engineers must then prepare
preliminary designs for each stretch of the
shoreline and indicate such things as how
much each structure might cost; what the
life expectancy of shore protection might
be; what control methods to use under dif-
fering levels of property owner co-
operation; and what the maintenance costs
will be for various erosion control devices.
A public open house will be held on Mon-
day, May 21 to show concerned land owners
the location of their property in relation to
lakeshore and gully erosion risks. Members
of the public are invited to meet with the
coastal engineers conducting the study and
discuss their problems and solutions to lake
shore erosion. The open house will run from
2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the MacKay Centre, 10
North Street, Goderich.
MVCA meets
Dr. Joseph Connell, an expert in the field
of fund raising, provided some advice to the
members of the Maitland Conservation
Foundation at their annual meeting held on
April 17 in Wroxeter.
Dr. Connell, executive secretary for the
Grand Valley Conservation Foundation,
provided many suggestions which have
helped his Foundation raise $1,500,000 in less
than ten years.
•" The 13 members of the Maitland Con-
servation Foundation, a registered, non-
profit organization, direct their efforts
toward raising money or donations of land
from local individuals or businesses in-
terested- in furthering the work of con-
servation in the Maitland River watershed.
The Foundation actively supports the ac-
tivities of the Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority (MVCA). Since its formation in
1975, the foundation's projects include the
acquisition of Naftels Creek Conservation
Area and fund-raising projects for the
Wawanosh Lake Conservation Area and the
•printing of a history book, "Windings".
All donations and bequests can be
deducted as charitable gifts under income
tax regulations. Donations may be
designated for special projects of interest to
the donor. A landowner who has spent a
lifetime preserving his property and its
resources for future generations can depend
on the Conservation Authority to continue
the wise management and assure that the
• area will be maintained in its natural state.
-This year's Board of Directors, which
•looks after the day-to-day operation of the
Foundation, are Tom Sanderson, chairman;
Lorne Murray, vice-chairman; and Vince
Judge, Dave Gower and Ian Deslauriers.
To find out how you can become a suppor-
ting member of the Maitland Conservation
Foundation, inquire at MVCA, Box 5, Wrox-
eter, Ontario.
Fun fly to be held .
The Sky Harbour Radio -Controlled
Aircraft Modellers of Goderich will hold a
grand opening and Fun Fly at The Falls
Reserve Conservation Area Park in
Benmiller on Saturday, June 9 and Sunday,
June 10.
There will be flying of radio -controlled
model aircraft, including a fly -by • of full-
sized vintage planes, from.10 a.m. until dusk
each day with the official opening taking
place at 1 p,m. on Saturday. ,
Officials present will include Mike Garret,
director of conservation services with the
Ministry of Natural Resources; J.R. Powell,
executive director of the Association of
Conservation Authorities; and Dave Gower,
chairman of the Maitland Valley
Conservation Authority.
Radio -controlled aircraft modelling is the
fastest growing hobby in North America. It
is estimated that there are hundreds , of
thousands of radio -controlled model aircraft,
fliers across the United States. In Canada,
there : are over 150 registered clubs from
coast to coast with a membership of several
thousand. Each club, including the Sky
Harbour Redio-Controlled Modellers,
receives sanction from the Model
Aeronautics Association of Canada.
For the grand opening and Fun Fly at
Benmiller, invitations have been sent out to
radio -controlled model clubs in Michigan,
Ohio, Indiana, New York and Pennsylvania
as well as to many central and southwestern
Ontario clubs. It has been estimated (and
that is all the Goderich club can do since this
is the first time they have ever held an
official •opening) that there could be
somewhere between 50 and 200 radio -
.controlled model aircraft attend this event.
The general pubic is invited, with the only
fixed charge being the admission charged
by the Conservation Authority to enter the
park-. A silver collection may also be
solicited to help' defray the expenses of the
club.
There are 50 serviced family camping
sites at the park. Food will be available and
swimming and fishing can be enjoyed.

at 524-6332 or Elliott Rivett at 524-9432.
