This poem is dedicated to the memory
of Jac Groeneveld and J.W.
Hoornenberg, fallen to German bullets
at Vught, 30 August, 1944.
Gardens are blooming
birds trill,
Poets sing their free songs once inore.
It's a festival.
Violin music whirs by my panes.
It's just - your brave heart doesn't
discern it;
It's almost as in former years,
the children move side by side, singing;
they march to the music of the fanfare;
it's just - your young heart isn't with
them.
We could leave the constraints with
hope .
and trek to anew task - ready,
because your heart, bored through with
bullet holes
once beat warmer than our heart did.
The gardens bloom ,
and the robin trills.
The children sing, side by side,
"We are free again", someone exults at
my panes..
It's just - your proud heart was freed
before our own.• .
