Used primarily to crush grain and provide power, the wind machines became Holland's saving grace. Windmills were used throughout the country to pump water and reclaim land from the sea. More than half of the Netherlands lies below the high tide level of the seas and rivers. Good water control is necessary to keep the country from flooding and becoming unihabitable. More than 60 per cent of the population live in the low area and the water must be kept in check in order to make life possible in the Netherlands. Today dunes and dikes and modern pumping installations work day and night to carry away the excess. In centuries past, this work was primarily done by windmills. Many mills in England and France were bqilt .from wood, but in Holland the sturdy wind machines were constructed from stone and brick. Towering at five stories high, with wind wheels stretching out 30 to 40 feet, some 9,000 windmills were in use in Holland during the 19th century. Today only 950 remain, including 150 working ones. The massive mills can be best seen near Rotterdam where 19 giant mills, each five stories high, can be seen at a glance. The unique structures work on wind power.
