but she did try her hand at a few of the
more basic steps during high school.
Five years ago, not long before they
married, the Flemings attended a fun
night for the club, and it was there that
they decided to take a beginners class
in Londesboro. Both agreed that
because they found the class "a lot of
fun" they decided to stay.
Square dancing is derived from
courtship dances brought by European
immigrants to America, especially
English, Scottish, French and Irish
country dances. Over the years the
dance has been greatly modified.. It
became more and more popular in the
rural districts in the early 20th century
and was eventually introduced . in
schools and cities as well.
The Flemings say they, unlike other
club members, attend other perfor-
mances rather than just taking part in
the club's weekly practices. Many
members also attend dance events
throughout southwestern Ontario. Ron
said other clubs often invite you to at-
tend.
"Last week the.public school (in Lon-
don). had over 100 people dancing in six
squares," said Ron. "Once you get peo-
ple moving around it's great because
you get to dance to different callers and
each caller has a different style."
In May the Flemings may attend a
three-day convention in Hamilton at
McMaster University. Approximately
5,000 people show up to promenade
around rooms scattered throughout the
university. The Flemings try to attend
many major events as they can.
"There's lots of opportunity to travel
around if you want to," added Ron.
He said the big advantage to modern
square dancing is that no matter where
you dance the calls are always called in
English.
-You should be able to go to any club
anywhere in the world and understand
the calls," he said.
During Clinton's Klompen Feest,
Mr. Fleming will be the caller for the
Wheel 'N Dealers dance at the grands-
tand. The club will be demonstrating
their skills for 20 minutes and there will
be one square or four couples dancing.
They will be performing from 4:50 p.m.
to 5:10 p.m. and if the weather is bad,
they will be dancing in the arena.
