At this year's Klompen Feest
visitors and residents of Clinton will be
able to catch a glimpse of Clinton's very
ovvyn Wheel'N Dealers.
According to Beatrice and Ron Flem-
ing, , the square dancing club's
presidents, the group originated about
20 years ago at the RCAF station in
Clinton.
For those of us who are unfamiliar
with the North American folk dance;
square dancing is arranged in sets to
form •a square, (hence the name).'
These sets can also be arranged in two
lines facing each other or in a circle. It
is different from round dancing which
includes waltzes for individual couples.
Square dancing consists of figures
whose descriptive words are called by a
non -dancing • caller. The Wheel 'N
Dealers will be losing their caller who
has called the familiar dance steps and.
moves for 15 years. He will leave in the
fall and a new caller will take 'the
familiar position near a stand-up
"mike" to command the movements.
The Wheel 'N Dealers are what•
seasoned square dancers call a Modern
Square Dancing Club. This style has no
standard calls like old time dancing
where dancing is done to fiddle music,
and steps like birdie in the centre, or
dip and dive are performed. The . old
time form requires two couples work-
ing at the same time. The modern style
has a long list of movements and each
Movement is used depending on the
level of the dancers.
"We have to master 70 different
movements," commented Ron Flem-
ing.
Generally square sets are danced in
groups of three, followed by a longwise
or a round dance. Footwork is less im-
portant when square dancing. It is
more important to stress the floor pat-
tern and make the style appear lively
and free.
The Wheel 'N Dealers meet every
Wednesday night at the Clinton Public
School and generally enough members
turn out to form five or six squares.
Each square includes four couples.
When Ron Fleming began square
dancing he was a member of the local
Junior Farmers. He was able to keep
his interest in folk dance alive when he
attended the University of Guelph.
Beatrice, however, had: no real ex-
perience before the Wheel 'N Dealers,
