Lots of work goes into barbecue
Good food is a main ingredientat Klompen Feest. On Saturday, May 19 a giant
chicken barbecue will be held. The meal features half a chicken, potato, corn
and all the fixings. For mealtimes and ticket details see this year's program.
By Rod Hilts
What do you do with 1,600 half
chickens, 600 pounds of potatoes and 40
galtons of corn?. Answer-- Feil it to the
visitors at the fourth 'annual Klompen
F eest.
For the past two years, Bill Fleming
and the workers at Clinton's Fleming
Feed Mill have put together the meal
and served it to approximately 1,500
people (each year). This year the
Fleming Feed Mill team will be getting
some help from the Clinton—Kalmavik
members.
Bill said that the cooking process
involves 20 screens that are placed over
60 feet of wood and charcoal barbecues.
Last year Kelly Dalton and Mervyn
Dietz, two friends of Ian Fleming,
helped get the equipment for the event.
What makes that Klompen Feest
chicken taste so good? Before the
chicken is placed on the screens, it is
sprayed with a mixture of butter and
vinegar for basting purposes. Bill said
they never have any problem selling all
the chicken.
After the chicken is cooked, the tricky
process begins. In unison, the 12
volunteers must place a screen on top of
the chicken and carefully turn it oiler.
"If the wind's blowing the wrong way
it can be a dirty job," Bill explained.
Bill said that last year the, chicken
was purchased from processing plants
in the Kitchener area. This year,
however, the chicken will be purchased
locally.
Last year the potatoes were baked on
gas barbecues but this year Bill said
they will probably be 'done in ovens.
Can you imagine baking 10, 60 pound
bags of potatoes in your oven?
The low price of $6 for adults and $4
for children will allow you to have an
excellent meal consisting of barbecued
chicken, baked potatoes, and cream
corn. The dinner will be held on
_Saturday, May 19 at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. .
The barbecue will be held at the Clinton
arena. There's a limited number of
tickets so get yours early. See program
for details.
