Dutch are, among the most
efficient farmers in the world
The Dutch are among the most
efficient farmers in the world.
Dense population, expensive ground
and a high degree of technical
development have led the Netherlands
into intensive cultivation of premium
agricultural products. Seventy-seven
per cent of the total area (about 5.5
million acres) is under cultivation (63
per cent as pasture, 31 per cent farming
and six per cent horticulture).
Since the seventeenth century the
Dutch have been producing
magnificent crops of oats and providing
winter feed and lush pastures, for their
cattle by sowing turnips and clover.
The Dutch have always been
agricultural innovators. The modern
steel Dutch barn may be seen in many
parts of the world. In the northern
provinces of the Netherlands, you can
see the modern version and the original
side by side, with the thatched roof
supported by four stout poles at each
corner. These can be raised or lowered
to provide a covering for the hay
beneath.
The Dutch have been leaders in food
processing, from salted herring to
margarine which was first extensively
produced in the Netherlands in the
nineteenth century.
These traditions continue today. The
black and white Frisian cow has been
exported to many countries. Dutch
cows give the highest milk yields in the
World: 300 million gallons areproduced
each year in Friesland alone. Much of
this is made into processed products -
butter, cheese, condensed and
powdered milk.
The Dutch are also renowned for
their flowers, tulips and vegetables
including tomatoes, carrots, cabbages
and red and green peppers.
The high level of agriculture is partly
due to good agricultural education,
strong agricultural organizations' with
their associated --cooperative
organizations,
organizations, a complete agriculture
information service and well developed
research facilities.
