Queen crowning
The Heixnatland Club, a European
group from the surrounding area, spon-
sored a Mayfest dance on May 5 at the
Goderich Township Community Centre.
Part of the evening's ceremonies was
the crowning of this year's Klompen
Feest queen.
In 1981, the Heimatland Club was
founded by Manfred Losereit of RR 1,
Auburn who became its first president
the same year. Mrs. Eva Etzler of RR
4, Goderich has been the club's presi-
dent since April of 1983. The club
members are made up of ,Swiss,
Austrian, German, Dutch and Cana-
dian people.
When the club first began it was
geared for the young immigrant who
was unfamiliar with Canadian country
living. Club members then and now,
help settle newly arrived families into
homes, schools and churches.
Today, anyone can join the club.
At the May 5 dance guests nibbled on
European cuisine and listened to
Edelweiss, a band from Kitchener. The
•--•-- _. •--event marked the kick off -for the up- ---
coming Klompen Feest celebrations on
May 18 and 19.
The weekend event will conclude with
another dance on May 19. Whiskey Jack
will,y,supply the music
Diane Groenestege is the 18 year old
daughter of Arnold and Diny
Groenestege of RR 2, Gadshill. She's a
Grade 12 student at Northwestern high
school in Stratford and after Grade 13,
hopes for a teaching career. Diane is
president of the students' council and
also plays piano. She was 1983 queen of._.:
the Benlux Club and first runner-up in
the all Ontario pageant. Her club
sponsor represents Belgium, the
Netherlands and Luxembourg.
Pauline DeVries is the 17 year old
daughter of Harry and Margaret
DeVries of Exeter. She is a Grade 12
student at South Huron Secondary
School and plays on the school soccer
teach. Pauline's first love is horses and
she's president •of the Horse and Rider
Club and vice president of .a 4-H club.
After Grade 13 she hopes to study
animal health at .Centralia College.
Pauline's sponsor is The Canadian
Dutch Store in Exeter.
