Clinton News-Record, 1984-05-09, Page 34When passing through Clanton one of
the most outstanding landmarks to be
seen is an imposing black steel struc-
ture.
The highly visible object is in fact an
honored reminder of Clinton a few short
decades ago when the town was home to
the Royal Canadiag Air Force. It was
known as one of the finest Radar and
Communications school in Canada and
became a model for United States train-
ing centres.
The base, just south of town, now
known as Vanastra, was open from the
1940s until the flags were lowered in
1971. Many of the servicemen as well as
civilian .employees lived in the town,
swelling the population temporarily.
Today Clinton's population stands at
3,100.
Along with the Klompen Feest, Clin
ton is also home to another popular
celebration, the Spring Fair. Held an-
nually for the past 124 years, the Fair
boasts western Ontario's largest 3..x-
hibit of livestock. Competition at the
fair also attracts the community's best
cooks and needleworkers, and of course
the area's prettiest girls who vie for the
title of Queen of the Fair. This yearthe
fair will be held on June 2 and 3 at the
Clinton Community Park.
Summer is a busy time at the park.
Each Sunday afternoon from June to
September the horses are off and runn-
ing at the track.
Called, the Family Track, the park
has a shady picnic area and nearby
public pool for youngsters to enjoy. For
those who' want to try their luck, the
Clinton Raceway features tri -actor bet-
ting.
Commtuiiity spirit is an important
part of Clinton's success. Business peo-
ple and local residents work together to
make the town attractive for citizens
and visitors alike.

up the downtown core with parkettes,
gardens and sidewalks.
The ambitious Horticultural Society
members have put their green thumbs
to work to give us bright flowers and
trees for spring and summer.,
Within the next year Clinton's
downtown area will be even lovelier
when restoration plans for the town hall
and library are completed. Clinton's
grand, historic buildings are being
completely renovated and restored to
their original beauty.
If you want a spot to have a picnic,
but don't want to stray far from the
main road, visit the Clinton Con-
servation Area, just south of town on
Highway 4. It's ideal for families who
are looking for space to run and romp.
There's even a fitness trail for the
after -lunch constitutional.
Clinton's special events, points of in
terest and community spirit have -all
helped to give the town its popular
name, "The Hub of Huron County."
