Clinton has always been a welrume home Jirr (hutch
families. In fact this busy rum Wily was first settled
by a (latch family over a century ago.
In 1831 when Clinton uas no more than a wooded
wilderness, Peter and Stephen 1 aanderburgh travelled
to this area.. The Dutch natives decided to make their •
h ' al ."the corners", later to become the Town of
Clinton.
The 1 iu►derbure'hs built the first, home in the' town, a
log house and they established the first tavern, the only
one to he found for miles around. .4s .well they first
children to be born in the community were daughters
for each of the 1'anderburgh families.
Today the Dutch -Canadians still express the
determination, hard working spirit and gorldwill that
the Vanderburghs brought to this area.
Since its founding in 1831, Clinton has maintained a
positive- community spirit. Town officials and the
public have worked side-by-side to help give Clinton its
name "The Hub of Huron County".
Enthusiasm and devotion are two of the main factors
that have been put into the restoration work at the town
hal! and library. The magnificent old Clinton Library
has recently undergone rraassive renovation 'cork and
restoration on the town hall will be finished by July. An
official opening fiar the two facilities will take place in
October.
The giant undertaking is reviving the original beauty of
these two !Mailings as historic landmarks and as vital
community. centres.
