JbdI and Oates improve with e in Rock 'n Soul . art 1

surfae0i Then, like so many things today,
there is the symbolic value the album. ,
. perficially, there is the musical
excellence .of . the decade old group - the
perfect rhythm and the seemingly stark
sound• the' new releases, Adult duration
and Say It Isn't So add variety to the album,
but let us not forget the omni -important
familiarity. Of course, most of the songs are
well known. The album contains a certain
innocence; most songs feature the
wonderful side of love, wrapped in a
contemporary jam that naethe songss
a pealing. One might even find that one
didn'tinaow.that a few of the older tracks are
Ball and Oates' pieces (for example: She's
Gone and Sara Smile). Furthermore,
versatility is expiicity; the style ranges
from the Iloish Sara Smile to the definite 80s'
sound of Adult Education. Evidently, then,
the technology _now assigned to the 80s has
improved (unlike NO Young's attempts at
using synthesizers). The one criticism I
have of Rock 'n Soul Part I is that the songs
are all hit singles. With this album theyklad
a good chance to show off the diversity even
more. For example, the song Heartbreak
(the B side o'1 One on One) is a far better
tune than its A side. It was the song which
convinced nae of the conslatentiY high
craftsinanship that goes into every
notHtrulyln
Oates song. I feel that thehits

To return to the symbolic value of Rock 'n
Soul Part I, let's look at its significance.
This is a hallmark for the duo: 10 successful
years. It shows the interesting evolution that
has taken place for themover the years.
First, when they were in their teens they
sounded like McCartney; then they attained
their own sound with. their first big smash
Kiss On My List. They have been. one of the
jet -set in making videos. The latest release,

Adult Education promises an excellent next
album. This album supports my theory of

Summnariiy, this album is a history of -one
id the moat refreshing innovative groups
today, and in 1984, the year where, thanks to
Orwell, everything is symbolic, it is another
optimistic sign that the world (at least for
Hall and Oates) deteriorates not, but
improves. with age.
Kraft And Co. presents an afternoon of
chamber music at the Blyth Memorial Hall,
Sunday, May 13, at 2 p.m. Accomplished
classical guitarist, Norbert Kraft and
pianist/harpsichordist, Bonnie Silver, per-
form with Canadian tenor, Glyn Evans for a
special Mother's Day concert.
Established. in 1978. Kraft and Co. is an
unique chamber ensemble which has
already achieved wide recognition. The
combination of Kraft and Silver's in-
strumental talents with the vocal skill of
Evans offers a great variety in the light
classical repertoire of Kraft and Co.
Norbert Kraft is Canada's most
outstanding classical guitarist. Grand prize
winner of the 1979 CBC Talent Festival, and
first prize winner in the special category of
guitar, he has appeared on the CBC national
network and is one of the few guitarists to
