Drive For Five alive
"A certain amount of opposition Is a great
help to a man. Kites rise against, not with
the wind" - John Neal to the New
This quote certainly applies
York Islanders strategic climb up the
National Hockey League playoff ladder.
The Montreal Canadiens gave the
Islanders the right amount of opposition -
they beat them twice in the six game series.
But when the losses occurred, it was the
biggest help they could have given the
defending Stanley Cup champions. Les
Canadiens backed the Islanders into a
corner.
When the creature is cornered it will fight
to get out (Bryan Trottier's maniac
boarding of Bob Gainey that left the
Canadiens' captain with seperated
shoulders and a few stitches to the side of his
head).Montreal made the Isles fight back
from a 2-0 deficit. New York's fight was
definitely against the wind.
As a result New York Islanders "Drive for
Five" was kept alive last weekend, just as it
was kept alive on a life-support system in
game seven against the Rangers and in
game six against the Washington Capitals.
The Islander machine gets stronger with
every challenge.
This reporter isn't surprised with the
results. It was only a matter of time before
Montreal's bubble burst. I feel sorry for all
the "May hockey fans" who jumped on the
Montreal band wagon without fully realizing
what the Habs were up against.
Should be proud
Montreal turned a mediocre regular
season into a white wedding playoff wonder.
The Canadiens did what every .500 hockey
team dreams of - going a long way with not
much talent.
Predictions
Following winning predictions in both the
North Stars - Oilers series and the Islanders
Series, my Sports Report record nows
stands at 11-3
Oilers vs. Islanders
I'm sure this year's "Stanley Cup finally"
won't be the four -game cake walk for the
Islanders that it was last year but none -the -
less the Islanders will prevail again. •
The classic duel between defense and
offense will be won by the defense - the
Islanders.
I don't think the Oilers are capable of
containing their free -wheeling system which
will undoubtedly lead to a lot of defensive
miscues. The Islanders thrive on other
teams' mistakes and the Montreal series is
proof of that.
Butch Goring and Bryan Trottier should
be capable of blanketing Gretzky and the
Great One will probably take his share of
punishment.
Goaltending
Billy Smith is the key man in this series.
His success or failure will determine the
outcome. In my opinion, New York's one-
man show makes Grant Fuhr and Andy
Moog look like Laurel and Hardy. The
Edmonton duel are mediocre at best and it's
been a long time since Billy Smith has had a
bad game.
Poor scheduling
I'm not a big fan of this year's Stanley Cup
Final format. The first two games are in
New York and games three, four and five
are in Edmonton. If the Oilers happen to
split their games in New York it could be a
big advantage. No. I'm not making excuses
before the fact, but this could have an affect
on how the series will go.(Don't get me
wrong I'm not a die-hard Islanders fan but I
do appreciate a team with talent!
Bottom Line
The New York Islanders will win their
fifth consecutive Stanley Cup in six games. I
wish they could win the series in peace,
without a certain Montreal broadcaster's
ridiculous attempt at a play-by-play account
of the games.

This year's team has six returning players
and defense seems to be their biggest
concern.
Up until last Friday's 2-0 loss to Wingham
and Monday's 4-0 loss to Norwell, the Junior
Redmen had been scoring enough goals to
win games. But the team is lacking
defensively
"I would have thought before the season
started that we'd be weak offensively and
strong defensively when in fact it turned out
to be the opposite," Coach Bill Weber said.
Carlos Brand is the Redmen's leading,
scorer this season with three goals. In
Clinton's first four- losses they scored six
goals but defensively they allowed 12.
Scoring goals is only half of the game.
Outside centre half Mike Vincent saidthat
defense has been a problem with this year's
team but said that his team just hasn't got
the breaks.
"I figure we have a good enough team but
luck is going against us," Mike said.
Bob Ladd, the team's right outside
forward said that the team is not as bad as
their record indicates.
"We get sloppy in our own end and our
defense is easy to beat because we have no
speed. We have had our chances though," he
said.
Mr. Weber cited a lack of practice time
and previous soccer experience as part of
the reason for his club's winless record.
"Most of the kids only have experience in
mosquito soccer. They're getting very
sparse minor soccer experience in Clinton
compared to other centres. There's a large
gap between Goderich and Stratford and I
can see it getting wider," the coach said.
Mr. Weber said the team began preparing
for the season during the last week of March
but said there wasn't enough time for skill
= development.
The future of the Junior Redmen is fuzzy
since the team only has one Grade 9 player
on the team. Mr. Weber expects only two
other players -back -for next season. Unless -a
number of, Grade 9's show some interest
held year, CHSS will be pressed to field a
junior team. • -
Despite their 0-6 status, Coach Weber is
impressed with the play of his team.
"Theyshow good manners on the field and
play hard the whole game. They have. never
quit," Mr. Weber said.
The Junior Redmen's final game of the
season will be played Wednesday afternoon
when they host Mitchell, a team that is tied
with them in the standings. They will be
attempting to break a nine game losing
streak that dates back to last season.
"We're out of the playoffs so it will show
what kind of character we've got to finish off
the season," the coach summarized.

better individual soccer players than most
teams.
"Ball control and moving with the ball
quickly are `stressed. The team plays an
open game and our strength is in our fast
forwards," Mr.`DeGroot said.
Mark Cantielon is the team's leading
scorer at this stage with six goals in six
games.
Team Manager Kent Colquhoun said that
right now the Redmen are on top of their

The Senior Redmen raised their record to
4-1-1 following two victories last' week over
Wingham • and Norwell. The victories
boosted the Redmen into the heart of a
playoff battle between Stratford Central and

The CRSS soccer teams are moving in, opposite directions this season. While the Senior
Redmen are making a run at second place, the Jwuors are still trying Ili win,a game.

Clinton winds up their schedule against

Not an official protest
CLINTON - The substitute coach of the
CHSS Senior Redmen Soccer team on April
30 has decided that he will not file an official
protest against a referee's decision in a
game that Clinton lost 2-0 to Listowel.
Delfim Almeida told the News -Record
that he is not goingto pursue an offical
protest but is requesting a rematch
"because of the referee's misinterpretation
of the rules." He decided not to pursue the
protest ..after having' a telephone
conversation with Huron -Perth Soccer
Convener Fred Norman of Palmerston. Mr.
Norman felt that because of some league
rules, the Redmen's chances of winning the
protest were minimal.
The controversy at the game began when
CRSS players David Wright and George
Coventry were ejected in the first half when
they were given a red card. Listowel scored
one goal while Clinton was one man short.
Referee Ron Stone of Stratford then allowed
the ejected players to return in the second
half after admitting he should have raised
yellow cards instead of red ones.
- Mr. Almeida is arguing that yellow cards
don't constitute an ejection and is calling the
incident a misinterpretation by the official.
