•A Clinton man, Gordon Duern ofRatten-
bury Street, has come up with a plan for a
new town hall for the Town of Clinton that he
says is completely functional, would cost no
more than an ordinary building, but would
blend in perfectly with the present architec-
ture of the present Main street.
A proposal to form a Huron County police
force will be discussed at an open meeting to
be held at the Clinton town hall tonight on
May 9.
Stanley Township last Monday at their
regular meeting signed an agreement with
Zurich to provide a fire protection to the bot-
tom corner of the township, which had to be
protected by the Brucefield brigade, a
distance in some cases, of up to 15 miles.

Building of a new four -room school at
Holmesville to serve four rural school sec-
tions in the Township of Goderich will be the
topic under discussion next Tuesday night,
when members of the township council, the
township school area board and Glen Gar-
diner, Goderich, inspector of public schools
for the district will meet.
Work at the Town of Clinton Dump has
been completed and it is now equipped with
gate and lock. High wire fence on either side
of a lane back to the face of the duinp,
widens out at the edge, to allow plenty of
space for dumping and burning.
Four men have been held in county jail at
Goderich since their arrest in London on
April 9. They are charged with breaking and
entering and possession of stolen goods, in
connection with a break-in at John
Aldington's hardware store in the village of
Varna.

The past winter was one of the most
severe in many years and it is not yet known
just what damage the front has done.
• Chief Constable Strong has resigned from
his position as tax collector, not as chief con- s
. stable and Assessor Rorke has been given

Postal Law - According to the new postal
law, newspaper publishers can hold for
fraud anyone who takes a newspaper from
the office and refuses payment, and the man
who allows his subscription to be unpaid and ,
then orders, a postmaster, to. Mark a paper
"refused" and send notification to the
publisher, lays himself liable to arrest and
fine,
We are , scarcely through crying out
against •the rain and mud before we are
beseeching the street sprinkling man to get
busy.
Cheer up - This is not the only slow going
season we have had, so brace up.. On May
27th, 1907, six inches of snow fell and cutters
and sleighs were brought into requisition in
a number of localities. Of course we have
two weeks to beat that record but will prO-
bably not do it. •

A laughable thing occurred in one of the
churches, on Sunday evening, just before
the commencement of the service. One of
the members who occupies a prominent
position in the church, pulled off his water-
proof before taking his seat, and was as
much astonished as were the people to find
he had only one coat on. Realizing the situa-
tion, he grabbed his coat, and slid out, retur-
ning when he had secured another coat. •
A Reputation Not Coveted - Just now Clin-
ton is enjoying a reputation abroad which is
by no means enviable, and which we wish to
repudiate in total. Simply because 'three
Seaforth youths became concerned in a
heinous crime while here, is no reason why
Clinton should suffer for their sing. The peo-
ple of Clinton are willing. to be held responsi-
ble for their own acts, but it is hardly., the
fair thing to expect that they will meekly
shoulder the infamyof other places.
Police Week
During Police Week, May 14 to 18, every
Ontario Provincial Police office will be
holding an annual open house to show the
public how the provincial force operates.
OPP Commissioner Archie Ferguson is
inviting members of the general public to
see first-hand the efforts being made by
police officers to protect the community.
Police forces across Canada are using the
slogan: "Police and Community Working
Together". It represents the continuing
focus of police forces on a forth of protection
which encourages you to take steps to pro-
tectlyour own property and for one neighbor
to look after the interest of another.
"Our slogan illustrates the need for the
public to take an active role in the protection
of their community," said Commissioner
-,Ferguson. "Police Week affords us the op-
portunity to show that by working together
we will_haYe safer communities in which to
live. Drop in to see your local police office
and meet the officers who patrol your
neighborhood."
