Simply drive a stake that's approximately 2 inches wide., 2 inches thick, and about 6 to 8 feet long, into the soil about 6 inches away from the trunk, on the side of the prevailing wind. Then, fill the rest of the hole. Build a watering basin with the soil you've saved by placing a dike 4 to 5 inches high in a circle 2 to 3 feet away from the tree trunk. Finally, secure your tree to the stake by threading a 12 -gauge wire through a short lengih of garden hose and twisting the wire around the trunk of the tree and the stake already placed, in the form of a figure 8. Special tools ease painting Good equipment is as important to good painting as to any other job around the . house. If you plan to paint several rooms, or if you plan to do your painting over a long period of time, invest in good quality equip- ment, says • Maxine Innes-Holbrough, a home and family management specialist with the rural organizations and services branch of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. For speed. and convenience, she suggests using a roller to paint walls, ceilings and other large surfaces. A brush is best in cor- ners, along edges, arid in other places that can't be reached with a roller. Woodwork is usually painted -with a -brush... Different kinds of brushes and rollers are recommended for different kinds of paint. Latex or water•based paint is best applied with nylon bristle . brushes. Alkyd', or oil- based paints are easier to apply with natural bristle brushes. Ask your paint dealer what kind of brush or roller to buy. • Other equipment you'll need for .painting includes a step ladder, drop cloths, wiping rags and a roller pan. Edging pads and similar specialized tools are also available and can help ease the job. Good quality equipment lasts through years of service if cared for properly. Latex paint brushes and rollers can be cleaned with water, but a little detergent speeds up the process and provides better cleaning. Rinse equipment thoroughly with clean water and lay brushes flat to dry. Alkyd paint brushes and rollers can be stored overnight without cleaning, if wrap- ped in airtight plastic. For complete clean- ing, rinsein several changes of clean paint thinner. Once most of the paint is out, brushes and rollers can be cleaned with paint solvent. Rinse well . in water and remove .as much water as possible. Comb brushes and smooth bristles to preserve their shape.
