Hybridizers have rebred'the eueumber in-
to a miraeulonaly differentohgect than the -
plants that originated in India years, ago, _
Their latest development is the creation of
gynoecious varieties which have virtually
all female flowers (they're the ones which
bear the fruit) with just enough male
flowers to keep the females happy. Thus,
nearly all the energy of the plant goes 'into
producing fruit and production is higher.
Then they've selected the characteristics
home gardeners want — mild flavor and a
thin skin. New. `Oasis' cucumber, from Ball
Seed Company is a good example of the
plant scientists' success. If ever there was a
sweet cucumber, `Oasis' is it. And the skin is
so tender, you'll never find one in a store;
it's too tender to ship.
The new cucumber is a slicing variety,
producing fruit 4 to 5. inches long.

Shoff for the best carpet values
Shopping for the best value for your
"carpet dollar" is certainly a worthwhile
exercise. But don't be fooled. A low price for
a poor quality carpet is not a bargain.
Remember, the cost of a carpet reflects
construction, fiber content and appearance,
"Caveat emptor" or "Buyer Beware" cer-
tainly applies When you ate shopping -for
carpets just as much as it would for a used
car.
To install wall-to-wall carpet in a liv-
ing/dining room area can add up to about
half the cost of a new medium priced car, so
carpeting represents a major investment.
According to the .Canadian Carpet Institute,
two carpets made of the same fiber that
have the same outward appearance may
carry: different price tags. But the adage,
._.__`hhe_deeper.,ibe denser; the better" .rule ap-
plies. .
To help you determine the price yo
should pay, first of all, decide where the
carpet will be used. High traffic areas like
stairs and halls need a top grade carpet.
Medium grade is fine. for rooms that don't
get a lot of use (eg. a dining room that only
is used for "company"). Lesser grades are
suitable for limited use areas, like
bedrooms. _ .... ...... _
Compute Yearly Cost
"If you expect your dining room carpet to
last 15 years and you've paid a $20 a square
meter for it, then the -"cost" is
$1.35/meter/year. If it's a lower . grade
carpet and you really only expect it to last
three, years and you've paid $6 per meter,
then the cost is $2/meter/year. You really
haven't saved anything," says Helen Hat-
ton, spokesperson for Easy -Off Carpet Care
Assurance Program. '
When prices niportant, a room -sized
broadloom rug - in an attractive color can
look luxurious and doesn't require wall-to-
wall installation which can cost $3 to $3.50
per square meter. -
Don't skimp on stair carpets. Carpet
which runs the full width of the stair and
continues round the turn may look terrific
but it wears on the edges of the tread and
shapes and sizes, tom: includulg, the lemon
cucumber; at maturity the shape, size and
color of a lemon. "
The plant scientists have tamed vine Vie,
too, so that many varieties approach the
character of a smallbush. There's one
growing trick they haven't solved for you.
Don't leave mature cucumbers on the vine,
or they will stop producing flowers and
small fruit. Keep cucumbers picked and
they'll keep producing until cold weather
lays them low.
Sow seeds indoors_ four Weeks before Plan-
ting
lanting outdoors but plant them in -individual
containers such as Jiffy7s, peat pots or cell
packs so that you can transplant them
without disturbing the roots, which they re-
sent. You can also buy started plants in
nurseries and garden centers for planting
when the soil and night temperatures are
both warm.
The larger vining varieties need 48 to 72
inches between rows, with plants spaced 12
inches apart in the row. The new compact
bush varieties take less space.
Cucumbers grow splendidly in containers,
on patios and decks. Trellising them over or
agains a wall, either in containers or platn-
ed in the ground, is a good space -saving
technique. And by hanging down, gravity
will cause cucumber fruits to grow straight
rather than curling as they're apt to do if
they sprawl over the ground.

Choosing the right carrot varieties for
your garden is simple.. Just match your soil
type to one or more of the excellent varieties
available in garden catalogs and seed racks.
If your soil is sandy or light, long varieties
will grow well: In heavy or stony soils and in
containers, shorter varieties work better
Carrot types
Taper root or pointed - Root diameter
gradually decreases from crown to tip,
tapering to a point, Two popular taper -
rooted types are Danvers and Imperator.
There are many varieties within these
types. Danvers carrots are relatively long
and taper from slightly broadened shoulders
to a pointed or only slightly rounded tip.
Imperator varieties are usually longer than
Danvers (they grow to 8 inches or more),
less tapered and have a sharper point.
Stump rooted or blunt - Root tapers from
crown to tip, but tip is blunt, not pointed.
Chantenay is an example of this type.
Chantenay varieties are shorter than
Danvers or Imperator types with havy
shoulders tapering to a thick, blunt tip.
Cyldndrlcal . - spars only slightly from
crown to tip. Tip is somewhat blunt. Nantes
are cylindrical with only a slight taper from
the crown to the slightly blunt tip.
Ball shaped- Root is round, almost as long
as wide. New varieties of stump rooted and
ball shaped types have been bred to perform
well in containers and problem. soils.
The home gardener has the choice of all
four types' and can pick the one that best
suits his soil type and taste buds.
Carrots are is so easy to grow that nc
matter what type of soil you have, you can
find a variety that will thrive in your
garden. Shorter varieties grow better in
heavy soils, while longer carrots do well in
lighter, sandy soils.
If your garden drains poorly or the soil is
especially heavy or rocky, you may find that
it has produced forked or twisted carrots
because the heavy soil blocks the roots'
growth. For this type of soil, plant the
shorter ball rooted carrots. These types
have been bred for better performance in
heavy or compacted soils. -
If you have lighter soil, plant the longer
types, as they'll have plenty of room to push
their longer roots down.
If your soil conditions aren't ideal for the .
variety you want to grow, good soil
preparation can ensure a better harvest.
Decayed organic matter such as manure,
compost or peat moss can be added tc
improve all soil types.
The key to a successful carrot harvest is
matching the varieties you plant with your
garden's soil type.
