Birds love flower seedlings
Some birds_ are unmitigated pests: Jays,
pigeons, carows, blackbirds and the scruffy
little house sparrows can pull up' or nip off
seedlings. You don't want to do anything to
encourage them.
But then, there are the little beauties like
goldfinches, chickadees, cardinals and
juncoes, colorful seed -eaters that most
people regard as friends to be attracted and
maybe even pampered.
You can plant flowers to produce seeds
that these good birds love: cosmos,
gaillardia, strawflowers, asters and single
flowered marigolds, the taller the better.
After the blossoms have dried, the wild
birds will flock to pull seeds out of the flower
heads and they like the taller plants where
they can perch out of the danger of cats.
Of all the flowers, those m the thistle
family are most preferred by birds.

caulking or painting during the summer, -for
the same reason: Seal. cracks in the founda-
tion wall, or install a polyethylene air -
vapour barrier, if you suspect radon gas
may be filtering into the basement. The
Building Department at City Hall can pro-
bably tell you whether it's a problem in your
area. •
If reducing pollution and condensation at
the source doesn't make enough of a dif-
ference, the next step is to add controlled
ventilation. Put an exhaust fan in kitchens
and bathrooms, or at the very least, open a
__._.._window when you're cooking,_showering,
cleaning or otherwise producing moisture or
fumes.
You can modify forced air furnaces to pro-
vide your home with further ventilation by
installing an insulated duct between the out
doors and the cold air return plenum to
allow fresh air to enter your system. An ad-
justable damper controls the intake of air;
it's then drawn in bythe furnace fan,
filtered, warmed and distributed to the
various rooms in your house through the
heating register.
It is also possible to save heat while you
control ventilation by using an air-to-air
costs from $600. to $1500, so this is a long-
term solution.
When you introduce controlled ventilation
to improve the quality of your home's air,
the question of sealing for energy con-
servation purposes is secondary. The main
concern is to dilute the air and lower the
concentration of contaminants. But it_.
follows that if you introduce a form of con-
trolled ventilation, you should also control
the incidence of random ventilation by seal-
ing your house. This way, you no longer
have to depend on variable, wind -driven air
leakage to supply adequate fresh air, diffuse
contaminants and reduce humidity levels.
Despite the foregoing -list of -precautions, ---
you probably have no air quality problem to
worry about. In most houses, there is only a
mild problem, if any. It comes down to com-
mon sense: if you -know that potential- sources of pollution are present in your
house, simply bring in controlled ventilation
to deal with the specific problems: Opening
windows might be all you need, and if that
causes significant heat loss or uncomfor-
table drafts, you can consider • the other
alternatives.

Houseplants are wonderful pets. Quiet
and good-natured, they ask for little more
than water, light and the occasional kind
word. Not only can they "sit" or "play
